No mods. Vanilla game. It's too bad no one really liked the game including me. They should reboot the series and go back to their roots and not try and please the console crowd at the same time.

next car game is helluva frustratingly fun even just with AI since the races are so unpredictable, handling still need tweaking and the game still need a lot of work, but for a $25 it's still a steal, the dev plan to have online multiplayer too!

This is just an approximation; proper linearization (at the shader / lighting level) would've done an even better job.

I kind of prefer the darker look. It could also be calibration of your monitor. Those images were scaled down from like 10k resolution.

Nah it is just linearization. Most of the engines back then didn't have proper linear workflow (from textures to shaders and lighting) and made the images darker than they really should've been if you were using a physically plausible paradigm. I am also using a calibrated monitor, so that's not the issue. Also resolution has nothing to do with linearity. I just applied 2.2 gamma, which is just a cheap non-accurate way to get "linear" images. Those images are not 32 bit and were made with non-linearity in mind, so its even cheaper "linear" workflow because you are not getting the full dynamic range.

This made artists make overbright lights, textures with incorrect gamma and shaders that didn't respond accurately to light and other variables.

I think UDK4 and Cryengine along with the Fox engine use linearization correctly now, hence why their images look so damn beautiful.

I know what you did to the images and really didnt imply that the resolution had anything to do with color changes just that they were scaled down from that high.

I never usually edit my pictures cause when people look at them Id like them to know thats what the game actually looks like when they play it. There are a lot of people who go in and adjust gamma,tone, color correct and the whole nine yards before they post pictures.

I think you are missing my point. I think the artists did a wonderful job with the tools they had at the time. I am just pointing out how much visual information is lost due to non-linear imagery and how much better certain shaders (like the water shader) look with proper gamma. If you read the pixar article I posted you'd know where I am coming from.

I wasn't trying to be disrespectful towards your images or anything like that. I was just pointing out the technical shortcomings of UT3 (and UDK for that matter). It is one of the main reasons why most UDK games looked muddy, dark and overly contrasty.

Are you saying the images are higher res than 720p? If so postimg probably only allows 720p to be hotlinked to conserve bandwidth. Try imgur or something.
