It's from VirtualDesktop and shows basically what you will need on both sides:

PC-Side: Just the small server client. It's just a remote desktop app that needs to run to connect. I don't leave it running all the time and just start it up with default settings when I want to VR.

Quest-Side: A bit more complicated. You need to purchase VirtualDesktop from within the Quest. Then you need to enable Developer Mode and use Sidequest to sideload the version of VD that allows SteamVR (that is all here: https://sidequestvr.com/#/setup-howto found on the Sidequest page also mentioned in the vrdesktop instructions).

After that, it's basically just turning the server on the PC, starting VirtualDesktop on the headset and selecting SteamVR. Voila.

Note: If you don't want to pay (by buying VirtualDesktop) there is an alternative way which is supposedly not as good, but good enough, with a free app called ALVR which can be sideloaded via Sidequest. It's the same deal: A client that opens a remote desktop session on your PC, it just requires a bit more fiddling. I've never done it this way, but there are videos about it if you're interested: https://youtu.be/Tk9Qx07I2Pg

From everything I have read at this point it would be silly to buy a Rift. Just get a Quest and play the best of both!!

The fiber cable from Oculus to turn the Quest into a RiftS is nearly here if you do not want to go through all that set up but that leaves you with a wire. But you do not need an extra box. But no many of us here on the Rage do not have a spare box or an excuse to build one.

No idea why anyone would buy a wired headset any longer. I guess the screen maybe better at this point but honestly I don’t care, would rather have no wire.

Higher resolution, higher fov, higher framerate. The Valve Index, for example. Although despite it's advantages, it's clearly not very future-proof. It's pretty clear that we're moving toward wireless, inside-out tracking, with stand-alone capabilities, and anyone who can't match that is going to be DOA. May as well add finger-tracking to that list now too. Oculus is killin' it right now, they're so far ahead of everyone else in most of the areas that matter.

I could see choosing a wired headset if it were something like the Pimax 8k Plus though... but in a couple years we'll be doing all of that wirelessly too.

A quest 2.0 is what I'm really wanting to see, with a Thunderbolt port. I'm keeping my CV1 until that gets released.

That's probably going to be at least a 2 year wait, who knows, maybe longer if this one keeps selling like it is.

Considering how many upgrades the quest has gotten in it's first year... I suspect it's going to stick around for awhile. It's this perfect little platform that is just capable of so much. I think 90Hz is the next thing that will get unlocked officially.

I played with the latest version of Bigscreen, and I'm happy to say that it doesn't suck anymore! It helps alot for them to host alot of rooms with good video streaming, instead of relying on users streaming their desktop. We should do a Rage3d meetup some time.

Not sure that will ever happen as the OLED screens them selves are lower clocked than 90. There are rumors that they might do a refresh of the Quest with 90Hz screens but if you have the old units it will not be a software update. You would have to trade up. Kind of like the new Switch V2.

Personally I would hold out till they jump to 120.

The 72hz limit is due to them not thinking the hardware was really capable of rendering at 90fps to make 90hz worth it. So they only got an FCC cert for 72hz instead. But the panel is capable according to Carmack. Although he also doesn't think they will get it re-certified to unlock the 90hz.

It wouldn't make much sense for them to increase it now anyways. Even for Oculus Link games, more fps means you need more bandwidth over usb, and they've pretty much maxed it out. If Carmack ever gets the 3.1 support up and running, then maybe 90hz would be useful.

It's certainly not going to happen with Quest-native games, as they're pretty carefully tuned to run at their current levels.

So I was pretty meh on Beat Saber - especially going through the "career mode" or whatever and some of the bullshit things they throw at you that basically break the way you're supposed to play the game - but now that I've modded it to take custom maps, wow do I love this game! Definitely recommend if you haven't.

I tried a few of the recent handtracking demos that people have released on sidequest. Overall, they suck pretty hard. Handtracking has some way to go before it's ready for prime-time.
  1. There's one that's pretty cool where you push buttons to control a model train. That works pretty well, as the interactions are very simple, and the buttons are large.
  2. My favorite demo has an army of little orcs attacking your flag in a castle, and you can kill them by swatting them away or squishing them. When it works properly, it's really very cool... but it bugs out constantly so those moments are kindof rare. There's also a couple of experimental weapons where you can shoot swords or lasers out of your fingers, and they're neat but don't work well most of the time.
  3. There's also a piano keyboard demo, but that one sucks pretty hard.
I'm not sure whether the problems are because of the native oculus handtracking, or the specific implementations of the demos. The SDK has only been out for a few days, so you shouldn't expect things to be great yet. But the handtracking on the home screen isn't great yet either, so I think a lot of it really has to be improved on Oculus's side.

Still, the moments when it works actually feel pretty magical. I was concerned that the lack of tactile feedback would be a major problem, but actually I think it's going to be fine as long as everything else works properly.

I'm looking forward to someone doing a proper demo where you can actually hold objects and manipulate them. So far it's really just pointing or touching. Hopefully Oculus will do a version of First Contact that works with hand tracking.

Yea, hand tracking at this point seems terrible, but I’m sure they will improve it a lot, didn’t mess with it long, just navigating menus wasn’t working well so I cut my loses and quit.

I'm probably going to get a quest sometime in the next few months. Tired of my PSVR and Nolo VR solution. Hey they work pretty well but I'm ****ing tired of base stations, and so many wires.

Wireless VR work good on the quest or is it still better to use cable? Hell even if it's just one cable it's better than the 3 I have to use at the moment .

Also I see the quest is getting Dynamic Fixed Foveated Rendering which is pretty cool.

Wireless VR work good on the quest or is it still better to use cable? Hell even if it's just one cable it's better than the 3 I have to use at the moment .

Also I see the quest is getting Dynamic Fixed Foveated Rendering which is pretty cool.
Obviously all the games that are built for the headset work wirelessly, but if you have a good WiFi network in your house it's easy to get wireless through your PC as well. But yeah, it is only one cable if you do hook up.

How's the lag? I have a asus rt-ax88u so I should be pretty much OK, but is there any noticeable compression artifacts or delay?

Using VirtualDesktop, a 5ghz WiFi and SteamVR it works great. If you want to play Oculus Rift S games through the Oculus launcher, you either have to be tethered or use Revive to launch through SteamVR... but in that case (launching Oculus Rift S exclusive games through SteamVR) I do notice lag. I think it's just too many different layers of decoding.

So provided you don't already have a huge catalogue of Oculus Rift games or plan on buying most of your games through Oculus (not counting Oculus Quest games which obviously run fine), and have the WiFi, it should run great!

Went on a spending spree for Quest games today.
I bought:

Vader Immortal Episode 2

Acron attack of the squirrels (this should be a blast with the family)

Robo Recall Unchained

Moss

Hope you had your quest for a while because I think all three Vader Immortals are free until Jan 31st with a new Quest I think (you can probably get a refund if you got it recently).

I've been enjoying Robo Recall, not sure on the other two... definitely need more game reviews here so I know what to spend and what not to spend my money on.

I bought my Quest before that deal started with Vader Immortal.

Acron and Moss are also on Steam and have reviews for them if you want to check those out.

Acron is an MP only game, it requires 1 person with VR to play as the tree protecting their nuts, and 2 to 6 players (minimum of 2, Max of 6) using their smart phones and the Acron app to try to steal the trees nuts. Its a party game, so keep that in mind.

Moss is a fun platformer action game where you control a mouse, it is a lot of fun. The game won all kinds of rewards and the reviews are all like in the 80s and higher.

alright, played Acron: Attack of the Squirrels with my wife and son today. It is a lot of fun to play and with many laughs to go along with it. It is a great party game, I highly recommend it. Its for the PC as well, but I suggest getting it for the Quest version so you can take it to parties with you.

I've picked up a stupid amount of games this month for all platforms. Picked up The Under Presents and downloaded about 120 games from the Vive Infinity service for my Quest, more so to use one of my Comcast Overage BS to the limit. Made my planned mark there as well. Over 2 TB downloaded this month Seems like 1 TB is no longer enough as I had come close to it the last 4 months straight until I hit the gas this month.

Soon as the 64Gb Quest is back in stock anywhere I'm gonna snag one. I'm not likely to use it solo very often, so I'm not overly concerned about having less space.

For me the 2 issues I have is 72HZ seems to be a bit low, is this noticeable? Also the FOV is supposedly lower than the PSVR which I'm using on my PC at the moment.

Of course the much higher resolution and one panel per eye would be a upgrade, (and not having to deal with other ****).

For me the 72hz hasn't been noticeable at all, no I'll effects from it.
I believe the Quest is 95 Degrees FOV, where as the PSVR is 100 Degrees.
