GTA: The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition

Rockstar has finally announced its don't-call-it-a-remaster remaster of the Grand Theft Auto 3 trilogy. There's been word of it using the Unreal engine, but I'm not expecting anything other than minimally touched up graphics for current HD/4K displays, and some gameplay improvements to make the 20 year old games playable again.

Whatever the case, I know GTA3 is nigh unplayable on modern machines in its original form, so I'm very, very happy to be able to return to Liberty City and run amok again, like old times. Though Vice City and especially San Andreas were filled with more awesomeness, I've always preferred GTA3 for its style, simplicity and audacity.

So, time to dust off my Dodo flying skills.

You also only have till the 11th to grab the original releases of GTA 3, VC and SA before Rockstar pulls them from everywhere. Why does that matter? Because the original versions are modifiable and it's expected that the new ones will not be.

More people care about GTA, and up until Max Payne 3, it was basically a PC franchise as the earlier ports sucked.

Even if they wanted to, some of the artists (or their children) will probably say no. For eg. the people controlling Michael Jackson's estate said that Michael wouldn't have ok'd his music for Vice City if he knew what the content of the game would be. No one knows if it's true or not but music licensing is still nightmarish for videogame publishers, even the big billion dollar ones. Especially when you take global regions into account.

You might need to rely on mods if you want the same soundtrack from the games when they were released.

A strange conclusion to draw from those system requirements, as they are higher than GTA 5.

That being said, I don't expect a ps4-level of graphical fidelity, and I think rockstar have been hinting that it's not going to be on that level too.

Its a little weird seeing the PS2 era graphics "remastered" and end up looking more cartoonish...like fortnite, but without a cartoonish looking environment.

I never played any GTA...well i think i tried one for a bit (old one, top/down)

I bought GTA5 when it was on sale long ago...and got it for free on the epic store when it was the free game of the week...
