Default Is WXGA or SXGA + better for matching with Mobility Radeon 9600 ?

Hi to all,
I am choosing between two different asus models, both of which stock the 64MB version of the Mobility Radeon 9600 . The main difference is between 15.4 WXGA (1280 * 800) and 15.1 SXGA + (1400 *1050), The 15.1 being substantially cheaper in price. Should I go for it ? I see no tangible advantage in using widescreen displays other than the correct aspect size for widescreen movies, please correct me if I am wrong...also, is there an advantage in using widescreen for gaming ?
many thanks!

I would say go with the SXGA. There are three different types of LCD's.

Best Quality = UXGA
Good Quality = SXGA
Normal Quality = XGA

Unfortuantly, I've only seen widescreen LCD's in XGA.

There are 44% more pixels on the SXGA screen than on the WXGA screen. Because of this, in native resolution with 64MB of VRAM, you could expect higher frame rates in games with the WXGA display.

The SXGA will look much better in games that do not support widescreen... even on non-native resolutions. Trust me on this.

Widescreens are nice for work but I do not like them for gaming or movies.

many thanks for all the replies, but isn't the whole purpose of widescreen to show movies that are encoded in 16:9 format in a format that's closer to the original ? In theory, movies that have "Widescreen Format" should be better on wide screens...correct me if I am wrong on this....

You are correct on that. I guess which you prefer for movies depends on whether the DVDs in your collection are 16:9 or 4:3. In anticipation of getting a HDTV, I have made sure that all of the DVDs we have purchased during the past three years have been widescreen. These look great on my widescreen laptop. I can understand, however, why someone with a large collection of 4:3 DVDs would prefer a matching screen.

For information on playing games on a widescreen laptop see the Widescreen Gaming Forum.
