How to update your LinSMP install to Client v6!

Now that the 5.91 SMP client has expired, you have to upgrade. Here's step-by-step to make it happen. I recommend doing it when a WU is just starting so you don't loose as much work if a problem occurs with the WU after upgrading. Typical error that would trash a WU would be running ./fah6 without the -smp flag. All of my VMs but one were upgraded without losing the WU progress, and that one I ran without -smp.

Here are the instructions from within your VM.

Code:

cd FAH
wget http://folding.stanford.edu/release/FAH6.00beta1-Linux.tgz

NOTE: if that doesn't work due to the Stanford website updates, try:

wget http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/FAH6.00beta2-Linux.tgz

Next, extract the client.

Code:

tar xzf FAH6.00beta2-Linux.tgz

Next, Kill the FAH process.

Code:

sudo killall fah*

Configure the fah6 client. I don't know whether this is critical, but there are new options. I stuck with the defaults.

Code:

./fah6 -smp -configonly

Modify the rc.local file. It is critically important that you add the -smp flag or you will start doing single core WUs. Change where it says ./fah to "./fah6 -smp"... Use ctrl-o <enter> and ctrl-x to save and exit.

Code:

sudo nano /etc/rc.local

Restart the VM and it should run with the v6 beta1 client.

Updated to take out extraneous stuff.

Just in time it appears. The version 5.91 client has expired as of today and there's no replacement at the default download location yet.

In the meantime, it looks like some people will need to update clients to version 6, or do no work today if they restart their VM, or finish a WU...

FYI - I have been able to update clients to version 6 and not lose work following these exact instructions.

ugg i cant get it to work error code 404 dooing it the hard way droping it in the share file did not work either i also tried changing the sudo command using FAH6 still get fail

switched mine over and didnt lose a unit

only thing i noticed was when i went to kill fah it said it was already off so that step wasnt necessary for me
(prolly cause i was gaming and had turned off the vms COH OF doesnt play well with the vm running)

I've updated the getFAH file on the server (mdc.kastillo.org). Using ./update in the v2.5 client will work now. It will stop the client, update the getFAH file, download the new version and restart folding.

I have not come up with a wish list for improving the current version as of yet. I'm pretty satisfied with v2.5 for now.
