Like almost all planetoids, we didn't see it coming. We were only able to record the Shoemaker Levy impacts so well because it was actually orbiting Jupiter and so we were able to find it a year in advance (and even then, it was a lucky spot).

It's too expensive to constantly monitor Jupiter and Saturn with really big telescopes.

But amateurs do that, 24/7 with their small telescopes and webcams.

So pretty much all recent big impacts into Jupiter and Saturn were discovered by amateurs.

My prediction is that someone far far away was trying to destroy earth, so they sent an asteroid. And it was timed to reach Earth at December 21, 2012 (end of the world!) But due to the inaccuracy of such a long range calculation they missed earth by several hundred million kms. Thus, when they find out, they'll have to send another one.
So hear it from me first, the end of the world has been postponed. Its now going to end some 5000 years or so from now.

Edit: did some googling on the shoemaker/levy impact (since i didnt know about it) and apparently Jupiter has had a bunch of stuf smash into it in recent years. One in 2009, and another in 2010.

Seems Jupiter's gravity has been pulling in some asteroids which has affected their trajectories.
