ATI Technologies New monitors vs. old monitors; how Eyefinity is cheaper to run than dual displays

I was complaining () at work about the humidity, as the office turns off the A/C from Friday night until Monday morning. Outside this morning the humidty was in the 90% range, dropping now to around 70%. It's pretty soupy.

As I was complaining, a co-worker said 'Well, maybe if you didn't have three monitors you'd feel cooler!'. He has 2 Dell 2007FP monitors, I have 3 Dell P2310H's. He can feel the heat coming off his displays, I can't on mine.

We go look it up, and a single 2007FP burns 75W, it's an 16ms Ultrasharp with IPS and old ass backlight. The P2310H burns 22W, and is a TN 5ms panel with dual CCFL. Not even LED backlight. Idle power on the 2007FP is 2W, on the P2310h 0.42W.

So I'm running my 3 screens in the power budget of one of his (and enjoying Eyefinity). His retort was 'what about that graphics card?!?' Turns out, my 5830 running in Eyefinity mode idle (400Mhz engine, 1000MHz memory) is using about 30W, so I'm still under his 2 display 150W budget. When the displays go to sleep, mine uses less power for the screens alone. I don't know what his video card is, but I suspect it's a FirePro V4800. Idle around 10W iirc.

Modernize people, you're living in the past!

To be fair, if he didn't have IPS panels it would be a different argument, and it's not like he needs IPS either; dBA, not working in photoshop or video editing, rendering etc. He just likes the old 4:3 aspect ratio. Cos he's old.
