STEPHEN KING BREAKS NEW GROUND AT MARVEL WITH ORIGINAL COMIC SERIES BASED ON HIS EPIC THE DARK TOWER

New Comic Series Exploring the Origin of the Notorious Gunslinger Character Marks First Time Stephen King Has Produced Original Content for the Comic Book Format.
Marvel Comics to Launch First Issue in April 2006.

NEW YORK – World Fantasy Award-winning writer Stephen King, long acknowledged as the master of modern horror, and Marvel Comics join forces this spring to launch a ground-breaking new comic book series adapted from King's magnum opus, The Dark Tower.

The comic series will mark the first time Stephen King has produced original content for an ongoing comic book project. The series will expand the saga of King’s epic hero, Roland Deschain, whose quest to save the Dark Tower is captured in seven best-selling novels published over the course of twenty-five years. King’s unparalleled storytelling power will inform new stories that delve into the life and times of the young Roland, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the burden of destiny he must assume as a man, the last Gunslinger from a world that has moved on. The comics will work in conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining the saga’s mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself.

"As a lifelong fan of Marvel comic books, and as an adult reader who’s seen comics "come of age" and take their rightful place in the world of fantasy and science fiction, I’m excited to be a part of Roland's new incarnation," said Stephen King.

The series will be illustrated by Eisner-award winning artist Jae Lee.

King continued, "I love Jae Lee's work, and I think this is going to be a dynamite partnership. Frankly, I can’t wait."

The first issue is scheduled to debut in April, 2006 with a hard cover collection of the first 6 issues released Holiday, 2006. Fans will start seeing promotional items – which feature more info in the series – beginning this December. Watch for more info as it becomes available at Link

I just became a comic book collector !

I saw in the bookstore the other day Volumes I & II of the encyclopedia of the Dark Tower Series. It was actually titled something other than " the encyclopedia of the Dark Tower" but I cant remember exactly what it was. It's not by King, but 2 other guys. I will probably pick them up in a year or so when they are the cheap on eBay or somewhere.

They should really consider doing an animated movie series for the Dark Tower. Done right it would be awesome. I cant see them doing a real movie version now that Clint Eastwood is all old n' stuff ... cuz he's the only one I can imagine ever playing the part or Roland of Gilead.

Thanks for the heads up !

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but the book is now out (on it's second issue, I believe), and I was wondering as to what some of the above think of Jae Lee and Co.'s work on the book. (I love it, Jae Lee knows about mood, and the colorist on this book is at the top of his game.)

Just started the Dark Tower series (on The Drawing of the Three right now), and that looks pretty cool. Looks like I might have to pick these up after I've gone through the series.

I stopped reading about that series about 10 years ago, after the 4th book. I think the second was the best. "Dada chuck?"

It's how he started... Book 1 of the The Dark Tower series "The Gunslinger" was his first published work.... and the series itself ties in a lot of his other works such as 'The Stand', 'Salems Lot', 'Insomnia', 'Bag of Bones', 'The Talisman', 'Black House'..... and a few others.

you really need to know king's work to really enjoy the Dark Tower saga, but believe me;once you start you can't stop...I bought the complete series last year and started reading...3 weeks later i finished them...The only thing that REALLY bothered me was the ending ,the ones who read the books now what i mean...King even gives his readers the choice some pages before the ending to stop right there,or read through untill the last page, cause he realises that the ending would come as a shock to most people...

Damned,i miss Jake,Suzanna,Roland and that animal compagnon(forgot his name),and i really hope that someone has the guts to make this into a mini-serie...That should really make my year lol

King is one of the greatest ever...In one of the books of the Dark Tower he writes about a mono-rail that has come to live and the main-characters are his "prisoners"(you need to read the whole story to comprehend this lol)and the mono-rail starts a riddle-contest.The one who ask a riddle where the other one doesn't know the answer to,wins...Crazy stuff...

Anyone who likes the Dark Tower series should check out Eyes of the Dragon. Another Stephen King novel that was more fantasy/medieval. It was pretty good from what I remember reading it a long time ago.

I only got thru the first 3 or 4 books in the Dark Tower series when I was reading a lot in my teenage years. I gotta pick those books up again and finish the series. It is great stuff, like most of Stephen King's work.

I have to disagree and say that you absolutely DO NOT have to have read King's other works to fully enjoy The Dark Tower series. There are references to his other works but any major links are told in full in the DT books. King has a tendency in even his non-DT books to have references and allusions to his other stories.

For all King's labeling as a horror writer, I've always found the real reason I've loved his books is his ability to write characters that you actually give a damn about. His plots tend to fall apart but the characters usually stay strong.

I've read the entire series and the first half was really, really good. Then he got hit by that van and broke his sh-t filter, so the man just can't write an ending any more IMHO. I think the way he ended the Dark Tower series just absolutely killed it (at least for me). His later stuff got so bad that I don't read anything from him anymore. It just seems that he gets into the story OK and then just pushes out a bunch of rushed junk to hurry up and finish the thing off.
