BOM 'bug' in the editor I used - seems to impact Firefox but not IE. Will fix shortly as it is somewhat annoying.

nice review, very detailed and informative. Just one thing, could u include a menu/table of contents so we dont have to go from page to page? EDIT nvm saw it in top right corner.

on a sidenote you stated that the Unreal engine 4 is being built for DX11, but that engine is due out in 2012/13 (w/ the release of next gen consoles), so wouldnt they be building it for DX12?

Not that I'm aware of; as there is no spec finalized (or even sketched out and shared) for DirectX 12 they can't design next gen hardware to run it. Next gen consoles will be loosely Dx11 based, as current stuff is based around Dx9 loosely.

Thumbs up Great review

I loved the little ATI batman guy I can't wait for these guys to get stocked more at etailers! I've been holding out on all those 4xxx deals for these!

Two things I can't wait to see, how the tessellation will get used and programming for the GPU.

RE SGSSAA:
What about "Super-AA"? Like AAA at Performance (8xMSAA for geometry edges and 4xASTT for transparency).
Do we really need more than 4xAA for textures and bad shaders?

Question:
http://www.rage3d.com/previews/video.../index.php?p=4
Quote:
If anything, it would likely do even better if they had more than the 16KB shared memory size on Nv GPUs.

That's where it will get fun going forward. For DX11 direct compute support (specifically CS_5), all devices going forward will have double the g80 shared memory to 32KB. Also, Stanford finally has the new algorithm publicly available in a new molecular simulation package. So all ATI's new devices will basically be better at this since we added that shared memory for DX11. A good reason for anyone buying a new card to get a DX11 card.
Hm? The HD4000 series have shared memory already (16 KB).

Right, but they don't have a hand-coded optimized client.

I'm pretty sure that Authour is spelled Author. It's in the heading on every page and has been there as long as I can remember. I've mentioned it before.

Nice review Caveman, though aren't the games you selected all ATI favourites? As in they consistently perform better than comparable nVidia hardware? I could be wrong about Left4Dead, I have no idea about that. Any reason why those particular games were chosen and not others, such as Crysis Warhead (one of the few games to really need a faster card) etc?

Thanks. I've been bugging our venerable Editour-In-Chief to change that, but he's dragging his feet

As far as the titles I picked; they are what I have and can use reliably. If I had Warhead I'd use it. Unreal is a TWIMTBP game. The EGO engine used in GRID is used in other games, as is the Source engine in L4D. Unreal Engine is obviously used elsewhere, and HAWX is fairly popular. I'd have liked to include more games and different types, but I ran out of time before deadline.

I'm also time limited as I have a job, and a family, and other responsibilities to cover as well as playing with cards. So while I'd like to roll out reviews in the vein of [H] and Anandtech, until Rage3D grows big enough to support salaried staff (right now everyone is volunteer) we're going to have to compromise a little.

See ya on the forums, and keep that feedback coming!

Thinking again on the choice of games, I guess it doesn't really matter because you are not comparing performance against other manufacturers.
