Compatibility Issues

All-In-Wonder Incompatibility
All-In-Wonder Incompatibility
Unlike the VGA Silencer revision 2 and revision 3, none of the new ATI Silencers fit on any of the All-In-Wonder cards I have access to. These include the All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro, the All-In-Wonder 9600XT, and the All-In-Wonder 9600 Pro. In all those cases the large chrome TV-Tuner box used on the AIW gets in the way. Arctic Cooling doesn't state that the coolers would work on any of the All-In-Wonder units so I can't fault them for that; however it is a step back from the now discontinued VGA Silencer which is compatible with that line of cards.

There are also compatibility issues with the 9800 Pro, 9700 Pro, and 9500 Pro I tried as well. In the case of the 9700 Pro and 9800 Pro, a rectangular crystal oscillator on the circuit board wouldn't let the cooler sit flush on the graphics core and required some slight modification to the plastic housing before it would fit properly. As for the 9500 Pro (which has the memory modules all arranged along the top edge of the card as opposed to the L-shape arrangement seen other 9500 Pro cards), a group of capacitors near the rear of the card were too high and completely blocked the back of the cooler.

Even if your card is on Arctic Cooling's compatibility charts, look closely at the area surrounding the graphics core to be sure that the unit will fit before buying. It would be a good idea to check around some forums to see if other people with the same card had success with whatever cooler you are looking at buying.

Like the VGA Silencer before, I expect the ATI Silencers to go through more revisions as various incompatibilities are identified and solved.
