Test Setup & Methods

We used the following test system configuration for performance testing of the AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition:

For stock performance testing we used DDR3-1333 9-9-9-27 1T timings. When overclocked we used DDR3-1600 9-9-9-27 1T timings. Below you can see the ASUS Republic of Gamers skinned CPUz (available for download here).

Comparison Platforms

We will be comparing the results to two other systems, one AMD and one Intel. For CPU performance and application testing we will use stock clocked Core i7 920 and Phenom II X6 1100T processors, with more tests runs with the processors overclocked to 4GHz. For graphics performance testing, we compared against the overclocked Phenom II X6 1100T. For gaming tests we set Texture Filtering Quality to High and disabled AMD optimized tessellation profiles.

AMD Vision Engine Center

You can read more about the Core i7 920 here and the Phenom II X6 1100T here.

Both of these CPUs are more expensive than the Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition, and were selected to show how the overclocked performance value of each system compares. Do more cores make you go rawr? Is higher performance per clock worth the extra total platform cost?
