3DMark 11 - Setting Expectations

Futuremark's 3DMark 11 Performance and Extreme modes allow us to see the effect of the clock differences between our test specifications. Performance mode is somewhat CPU limited, whereas Extreme mode is very much GPU limited.

Below you can see the relative performance of the cards in the column, against the card listed in the first row entry, for the 3DMark11 Performance test:

Adding the second card allows us to get a glimpse of how CrossFireX might scale. Ref 7950 CFX is two cards in CrossFireX at 800e/1250m; IceQ Turbo CFX is 900e/1250m; O/C CFX is 1085e/1775m & PowerTune + 20%; all configurations are with dual CrossFireX bridges, non-Boost firmware.

So, these results should give us some expectations for what we're going to see in testing, we're not going to see good scaling from adding a second GPU without bumping up the resolution. In a perfect world we'd see a 100% increase but due to the inherent nature of alternate frame rendering overheads (the multi GPU render distribution method), a gold medal result would be ~90%. We can also expect that the single Boost overclocked card is going to split the difference between a single card and dual card performance. It will be interesting to see how far behind the IceQ overclocked card is.
