The most obvious differences between the 9600 and the 9600 Pro is the PCB. The 9600 is built on ATI's 8500 PCB design and uses the older TSOP packaged DDR memory (which is rated for 250MHz). The 9600 Pro, conversely, is built on a new PCB and takes advantage of the newer modern BGA packaged DDR memory (rated for 350MHz), which runs cooler and faster than the older TSOP memory. Also, unlike the other cards in ATIs DirectX9 lineup, neither the 9600 or the 9600 Pro need an external power connector to operate. This is due in part to the smaller number of transistors used in the RV350 core (relative to the other DX9 Radeons), as well as the use of the smaller and more power efficient .13µ based cores.
