problem going from 3.5 -> 3.6

I tried removing my old 3.5 drivers today to upgrade to the 3.6 cats.

First off i went to add/remove programs and removed the control panel then the drivers, and i also removed radlinker.

when i rebooted i deleted the ati folder and then started the new driver install. The installer started and then copied the files and then up came this message

"Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."

I tried looking for this driver but i was unable to find it.

So i tried the "foolproof method" sticky at the top and also the one at driver heaven. An i can't get this driver install to reconise that i have a damn ATI card!!!

Please help -

Matt

Did you do a scandisk? Erase all the files in your TEMP folder?

All I did was ghost my machine, leave the Cat 3.5's in place and installed 3.6 over the top -worked like a charm.

Then again, I have no tweakers and I maintain my system well with Windows apps and Norton WinDoctor/DiskDoctor.

Good luck

Ive had that happen 2 me..i just loaded the driver off the disk that came with the card then installed the new one...the best thing is to remove ant remnants of the older driver..but sometimes you get what your getting...i just did a complete reinstall of XP PRO..and went with using the Omega 3.5 driver..then i saw today theye released the 3.6..so i un-installed the omega..and when i re-booted it said found new hardware,,(9800pro) ind started to reinstall the omega driver..well i hit Cancel right quick...and installed the 3.6
try rebooting a time or to ...But by now you Prob have it all done...Hope it all worked out for ya...

That's usually because your "standard VGA adapter" driver somehow got erased and windows can't load the default VGA onto the system ,and without it showing in the DM,you'll never be able to load your new drivers up..............search your windows disk (CD) for the driver, after you install it,you can then move on and install the 3.6's

This same thing happened to me going from 3.0 -> 3.1... Haven't bothered to upgrade since then (since I can do without the hassle).

Try to go back to a system restore point (I assume you're using XP). If not.. try to use the original CAt install discs.... I did this but ended up with horrible stuttering.

In the end .. I went with a full clean install (REALLY SUCKS).

I would love to be REALLY ENLIGHTENED as to why this happens or can happen.

BTW - somehow, I can't find the STANDARD VGA driver in my WinXP installer disc... it doesn't seem to look like the old windows. Tried connecting to MS website.. seemed to take forever and didn't get anything either....

So Joker, the clean install worked fine for you then?

Yes, it can be a bummer, especially considering how bleepin' long Microsoft apps like Office 2000 take to re-install, but it can work wonders. :)

Yes it did work fine. However, there should be no reason to reinstall your OS due to a driver update!!!

I'm beginning to have this strange suspicion that it's better not to uninstall and just to install on top of your old drivers.. haha

I'm with joker on this. I mean if ATI's cards need this driver why not have it avaible to download if you run into this problem. It dosen't seem like that big of a hassle to fix his issue although i bet it is.

Oh yeah, I had to reformat

It has happened to me several times in the past. Usually I just reinstall which ever drivers will install (some will, others will give you the VGA problem), then uninstall, and then install the new drivers. That works for me. I have all the Catalyst drivers from 3.0 to 3.6 on my hard drive.

I agree on the need to reinstall, but it is a very good diagnostic tool, and that is primarily why I so often recommend it.

In terms of over-the-top installation, that may indeed be the case. It works for me sometimes.

Good luck.

I've had all kinds of problems with the ATI driver install stuff, and the problem you're reporting is only one of them. A simple workaround is to remove any drivers you have in place, then install the Omega drivers; the Omega installer isn't nearly as "brittle" as ATI's, and I've never had it fail on me. Once the Omegra drivers are in place, you can keep them or ditch them safely and the ATI installation should go through without a hitch.

wow i dont know how the F the Stnd VGA driver got deleted of ure XP install if u boot into safe mode the computer will automaticlly boot with the Stnd VTGA driver if it doesnt well u have serious issues and SHOULD reformat

Turning OFF the computer for a few seconds then turning it back on should make it Find New Hardware..(your ATI card).....

Gandalfthegrey and TiTaNiUm,
HAHA... obviously u guys have not encountered this problem. Anyway, it's not that it doesn't detect the hardware.. it's just that it refuses to install any drivers w/o first asking/forcing you to go back to std VGA.

THEN it asks u to CHOOSE a location for std vga.. which I couldn't bloody find... then if I stick in my WinXP install disc... it still doesn't find it........ in the fed up.. used the AUTO-INSTALLER from my Cat2.5 (which worked without the need to go to VGA). But that gave stutters... so full reinstall of the OS. And it was good :)

Maybe someone can point out which directory or where to look for your Std Vga drivers.. cos the o/s can't find it by itself!! And I couldn't find any inf or other files in the various directories... sucks...

BUT without going further into my problems... which area solved since I'm sticking with Cat3.1 for the forseeable future,

bigjohns97, if all else fails - a full OS reinstall, although nasty, should help.

No Actually I have encounterd the problem where it tells me there is no display adapter installed on my computer...But all i had to do was put the Disk that came with my Radeon in and install the driver from that... then uninstall it and install the driver i wanted...If windows is asking you for all that other stuff..i think your issue goes deeper than just a missing driver...maybe corruption?...And anyway
After I install windows XP i put my Mainboard chipset drivers in, Except the Vga driver.. my mainboard doesnt have an onboard Video chipset..but i can load a driver for it off my mainboard disk..
I choose to go into System/Device manager..right click on all with a yellow !...and manualy install the drivers...i would have first burned the new cat driver on a disk.. and just loaded it from that....

Ok, you tell me what i am doing wrong.

Bios updates for all hardware.
boot from cd (winxp w/sp1 integrated)
format c: to ntfs and install windows
install motherboard drivers - reboot
install Intel App Accel - reboot
install network card driver
install dx9a - reboot
install sound card drivers - reboot
update sound card drivers - reboot
install ATI drivers - reboot
install ATI control panel - reboot

As you can see why i don't want to format my os everytime a new driver is released. I mean right now i have the 3.6 installed, what if omega releases a 3.6 driver, I am not going to be able to sleep at all knowing there are some drivers out there that might improve my gaming experience.
