Richard Huddy interview

With every generation our hardware becomes faster and more powerful, and we'll add interesting new features when we introduce our next generation hardware. Our focus is always on usable features which run at full speed, so I'm looking forward to the fact that our new hardware will change the games development landscape for the better in ways that games developers will welcome. The single thing which will make games look better in the next generation is full on HDR. HDR stands for "High Dynamic Range" and what it really means in our context is rendering 3D images using data which is very like that found in the natural world. "HDR" has become the buzzword in the games industry because a few games developers have started to show demos which use HDR and the difference is simply stunning. But the trouble right now is that all the HDR implementations in the market to date are limited in one way or another which makes the decision to use HDR a somewhat painful compromise. We plan to eliminate the compromise and thereby do away with the pain.
So R520 will support HDR+AA.

I like the part were he says they focus on bringing usable features so I guess HDR+AA will be playable.

He says that they only implement usable features so I guess that gives you an idea.

Great interview from Richard, as always :)

yep, and great news for us too

Komb, do you have any info about the reviews? Will the reviews be available before ATI officially annouces the product? ('course if this info is not covered by NDA too :hmm:

thnx

The R520 sounds better and better. NVidia's had HDR compliant cards but everyone knows what a huge performance hit it takes on the 6800 series.

I think ATI means that their will be hardly a performance drop...maybe the built a HDR hardware acc just like nVidia did with the shadows

My undestanding is that the reviews will hit the Web as soon as the NDA is lifted. And when the NDA is lifted we'll have the official launch.

..thought the answer will be something like that :( ;)

thnx anyway!

Dont forget this qoute Interesting I've seen David Kirk from NVIDIA saying that in his view some of our new features are years away, so I guess the new hardware could make a bit of a stir. I think this practically confirms it for me and what was david patrick saying well here is the linkDavid

I know I have posted this a few times but I thought it was important if the moderators think I should stop I will.

Yep, this confirms more or less HDR + AA. Awesome!!!

The thing is unless the game supports AA being forced on in the CCC with HDR there wont be a way to use it unless the game developers also issue a patch, as the games dont let you enable HDR and AA at the same time due to the fact it doesnt work (on current available cards) :(

Maybe there is not AA + HDR, maybe it just does HDR at an adequate speed at very high resolutions. The problem with nvidia's HDR before the G70 / Sli was that most people had to run it at low resolutions where the lack of AA stuck out like a sore thumb.

Whatever, it sounds like good news.

It's rediculous how excited I'm getting about the R520. I feel like I'm a kid. :D

Good interview. Companies must really hate it when their top people go to the competition :)

I don't know why he thinks Crossfire has those three advantages over SLI - thought all of those were taken care of by Nvidia already.

I also find his comments about the number of SM3.0 titles on the market disingenuous. Does he really think that if we had waited till now for the first SM3.0 parts that we'd magically get games using the new features in a couple months? No matter how fast a certain feature is, it will only become widespread after the first supporting hardware is superceded (DX9/9700) - i.e, even if HDR was fast on NV40 we wouldn't have seen many more games using it.

But having said all that, if the R520 brings usable HDR+AA, along with higher performance I will be ebaying my GTX and its TRSAA in a heartbeat. :)

Correct. All three points have been eliminated by nvidia. Infact, currently it is the crossfire technology which has three disadvantages over SLI:

*External Crossfire DVI connector

*Need of a special, higher-priced master card.

*Not currently available

Also correct but remember this is an PR interview. This is not about telling the truth but merely about selling more of their own cards.

All in all this is just an average PR marketing interview like ATI and nvidia are doing all the time without any usefull information. Stuff which might change average Joe's mind about buying a card instead of another competitor's card but nothing which should affect the "more informed" users here.

Where exactly does Richard state that the R520 offers HDR+AA?

He merely could have indicated that HDR "should" be playable at any resolution without AA.

*Internal Bridge Connector
*An SLI user cares about price? Come on now
*And outside of the games on the hitlist, SLI is also not currently available.

Regardless, both implementations are ridiculous in imho.

Well, he did work for nvidia fora while. ;)

Nowhere, but it's nice how he trumpets USABLE and tickbox throughout the interview. vindicated. And the brand loyalty bit, equally true words. I can't wait to see how HDR+AA gets panned IF it is truly a distinguishing feature.
