Unsuccessfully extracting files - What gives?

I dunno what gives lately. Whether it is a zip/rar file that I just downloaded or an install file (.exe) that is extracted (such as video driver, setup file, cab file, etc.), about 8 out of 10 times extracts unsuccessfully. I've even completely formated my computer, reinstalled, even scanned for viruses and spyware and I get the same problem.

Typically I get CRC errors - or it just says that there is an error extracting xxxx file or whatever - or an error during installation (which is, an error trying to extract what is compressed).

For example, after I formatted and reinstalled, I downloaded my video driver. Tried to run it - won't extract. Downloaded it again - same problem. Downloaded it from one of their mirrors and saved it to a different directory - same problem. Downloaded it again and THEN it decides to extract. What gives?

The only possible thing I can think of is this: I had just recently moved to another state where I now have a different ISP. I didn't have this problem with my old ISP. The ISP I used to have had a very slow download/upload rate (512/128 ). Now, with my new ISP (Brighthouse Networks), my download is 7000/512. Is is possible that when I download compressed data so fast that it doesn't come in through all the way? Would there be some setting within a router that can fix this? That's my only possible theory.

Any ideas?

Download newer version of winzip/7zip/winRAR (whatever you use, don't trust in Windows built in zip extraction) for updated CRC tables. Seen the exact same thing last week on a clients rig, simply downloading and installing newer winRAR version fixed it for them.

I had this problem before and it was caused by my NF4 Ultra chipset.

If you use that chispet do not offload the ActiveArmor firewall, or don't use it at all.

I use WinRAR v.3.51. I can try getting a different one. But is WinRAR extracting .exe files like video drivers and other installation files when I simply double click it? I thought they are just self-extracting files (extracted from within the file itself... or something). When I manually have WinRAR extract an .exe file, I get the same problem.

I have an NVIDIA nForce4 SLI chipset. I don't see anything about ActiveArmor.

Well, I think I'm still having the same problem. I tried testing it out on Nvidia's Beta Forceware 91.33 driver (for Windows XP / 2000). When I download it from their Primary Download Site and extract it using the newer WinRAR, the file is corrupt. I try it again, same problem. I try downloading it from Mirror 1 and 3 and it worked on the first try. I try the Primary Download Site again and it was corrupt. I download it AGAIN from the Primary Download Site and then it works this time. What the?!

Awwww dang it. I AM still having the problem. Since I just recently formated and reinstalled Windows, it was time to reinstall Microsoft Office. Every time it got to extracting cab files, it would always come up with an error and I couldn't install MS Office. I tried and tried and tried. Same problem. I even tried copying all the cab files into a directory in my hard drive and extract them with WinRAR - but I also get errors (some of them say that the file is corrupt). So, maybe the disk is bad? Nope. I uninstalled MS Office on my other computer and reinstalled it with the same disk and it installed with no problems. What gives?! What would be causing my computer to crap out on extracting compressed files???

Bad RAM or HD? What bowser do you use? You should check you HD and ram. Maybe HD cable is mess up. SATA or IDE?

I use IE.

I've tried reseating the RAM and unplugging and replugging the cables to the back of the hard drive. I have 2 1GB Corsair RAM sticks and a 200GB Maxtor SATA HDD. Any good way for testing these two items?

http://www.memtest.org/ for the ram and Maxtor software for the Harddrive. You can get the software from maxtor.com.

Use memtest for 8hrs. If it has error RMA it.

Most likely a ram issue. Run Memtest86+ overnight and see what happens.

I'll try memtest tonight and see what happens.

Edit: I just tried Maxtor's diagnostics program and everything passed. So, I'll do the memtest before I go to bed. :)

Well, I decided to run Memtest anyways and so far its been 4 hours in and it says that there are over 3000 errors. So, I guess it's safe in assuming that the RAM is bad and causing all these problems. I'll contact Corsair about getting an RMA (since I've got this RAM like a couple of months ago).

The Memtest is still running (I'm on my other computer right now). Does it run forever or is there an ending point that gives a more detailed description of what is wrong at the end?

It runs in a loop test 1~9, unless you set it or something. If is finds errors just stop it And RMA the ram.

Well, just to be TOTALLY sure, before I RMA it I am going to put the RAM in different slots and try memtest with only one RAM chip in at a time and then try the other RAM. Maybe only one RAM is bad?
