"AMD is slated to launch the Radeon HD 4890 card based on the RV790 core in April not the rumored Radeon HD 4970. The RV790XT A11 sample is running at 850Mhz core at 1.3V and 975Mhz GDDR5 memory. In comparision, a Radeon HD 4870 (RV770) card runs at 750MHz core and 900MHz GDDR5 memory. AMD told their partners that RV790 is expected to be around 20% faster than the current Radeon HD 4870 RV770 card and will compete headon against the GeForce 285 GTX card. The pricing? Between US$199 to US$249"

sweet if true and price

Basically, GTX 280 performance at GTX 260+ prices.

It does bring the value component back to the higher-end battlefield, and probably will force pricecuts on the 285 again.

So they need 1.3v on 40nm to get 850mhz on a 800/40 core? That doesnt make much sence.

No, they need 1.3v on 55nm to get 850mhz :)

Yup looks like the RV790 is NOT 40nm. But i cant believe that it will have just 800sp, it has to have atleast 2x more then midrange. Ati hasnt had a midrange chip that was less then 2x the power of the highend i dont think ever.

Edit:
But then again its keeping to the 4800 naming, so i guess the rumors make sence. Will be 35% more power over HD4870, and 8.3% faster memory. And i also dont see a X2 as it will suck ALOT of power.

Something seems odd tho, why need only 1.3v for 850Mhz, when the HD4870 needs 1.50v+ for 850Mhz. So they must have tweaked the core alot even if its still on 55nm.

"ATI is known for working on different speed-bins of various processors, for instance, its ATI R300 (Radeon 9700), R350 (Radeon 9800 Pro) and R360 (Radeon 9800 XT) were essentially the same chip, but could function at completely different clock-speeds. ATI/AMD has now chosen the same option since it does not immediately need a new GPU in the current competitive and market environments."

Makes sense. ATI is doing just fine right now in price and performance. I'm sure they're concentrating on their DX11 chip.

RV870 architecture design has been completed for the biggest part. Samples are expected in Q2. So that's very soonish...

On first post they say the next one will be 4970 witch may have the target gtx285 and maybe 4890 will target gtx260?!
Any way i already have my 4870 running stable and without problems at 850 and 1050 at stock voltage :) so if they upgrade the gpu and mem speed only they suck.

HD4890 should be targeting GTX285, but with a GTX260+ price.
