Bought a Dell Power Connect 2808 Gigabit Switch

Got it for $89, it was $84 a week earlier.

Interestingly it includes rack mount hardware and uses a standard PC power cable. A wonderful power cable was included. I installed the rubber feet since it will be used as a tabletop unit.

There were no stickers saying warranty void if opened so I took the top off and snapped a few pics. This one shows both the built in power supply and main board. I think the three Marvell chips with the heat-sinks do all the work. The big Marvell chip makes no sense because it doesn't really belong in a swith.

Looks nice. I think that's what I'd replace my netgear desktop GbE switches with. Either that or HP Procurve. Depends on the deal, I guess.

Here is the management screen:

And yes it also has a limited DHCP server but I wouldn't use it. Very odd feature to have.

It appears to have *some* flexibility.
Defining CoS Settings

Defining CoS Settings

Class of Service (CoS) global parameters are set from the CoS Settings page.

The CoS Settings page contains the following fields:

• Cos Mode — Enables or disables managing network traffic using Quality of Service.

• Trust Mode — Determines which packet fields to use for classifying packets entering the device. When no rules are defined, the traffic containing the predefined packet field (CoS or DSCP) is mapped according to the relevant trust modes table. Traffic not containing a predefined packet field is mapped to best effort. The possible Trust mode field values are:

– CoS (802.1P) — The output queue assignment is determined by the IEEE802.1p VLAN priority tag (VPT) or by the default VPT assigned to a port.

– DSCP — The output queue assignment is determined by the DSCP field.

In the market again. Having to replace the cord on my Netgear GS108T managed switch, so a good time to go ahead and deal with replacing a couple other older units I have hanging out here.

2808 still a good bang/buck in the managed switch market? Any other models worth considering?

we use these for our Dell KVM's and DRAC network. Not for general traffic.

We use Procurve stuff in at work but for $89 seems fair for home use.

Have you had any problems with them? Do you keep the firmware up to date?
