2015 WRX

Looks like the 2015 WRX will have a CVT, around 280 HP and get around 30 MPG on the highway.

My original plan was to replace my Civic about 2 years from now with one of these. Since my car was destroyed last month I was considering Mazda and Honda options. I think I'll go back to the WRX plan and wait for it early next year.

Has anyone else been following WRX news?

CVTs aren't that bad, you just have to set them up properly for enthusiastic driving instead of fuel economy like most manufacturers do. Also with paddle shifters you can hold RPMs through corners for autocross.

This is fantastic news! I mean, for a while there I was a little concerned that I'd have some buyers remorse when the new WRX was introduced.

CVT...

We're talking the WRX here, not the econobox impreza.

It has a Titanium belt, figured you would like that.
The WRX is basically a reworked Impreza with double the HP.

For the CVT haters the beefed up CVT has been used in the 295 HP Legacy over in Japan without any issues as far as I can tell.
From what I gather if you want a manual you buy the STI instead of the WRX.

I'm sure it will blast by BRZs all day long.

Back when I bought my Integra GS-R in 1996 manuals were a leap above automatics and there was no doubt about it. But times have changed.

With my Infiniti G37x 7 speed auto I don't think I could do a better job. CVT will be the same story unless power is throttled for some reason.

They should put thumb knobs on the gear shift so people can control spark advance and valve timing while they change gears. :bleh:

I like the idea of a CVT and except for rapid changing from reverse to forward I didn't have issues.

You don't get it. :bleh:

I'm just being an ass. My Acura was fun with the 5 speed manual. I had it for 10 years and put over 100,000 miles on it. I would want something like that for a third car and not a daily driver. Hurt your left leg or right arm and they are not very fun or practical.. I did both of those back in the day and driving was a bitch.

Nissan’s Andy Palmer: FR-S, BRZ are “Midlife Crisis” Cars
Funny thing is I didn't really consider it. :o

It's not about "issues" it's about performance, soul. CVT's are soulless. I am not arguing that a traditional automatic is a BETTER transmission, it certainly is not. It does however have more soul than a heartless cold dead CVT.

This is the WRX we are talking about, the sporty uplevel model with more power and supposedly better handling or whatever, and they use this in it. It's a ****ing shame really. It's like how BMW claims they make the "ultimate driving machine" and then puts runflats on everything short of the M models. At least tires can be swapped out.

IDK why the ****ing japanese don't have a dual clutch sequential yet. Germany has them beat by nearly a decade now. I thought they were supposed to be the engineering wizards that could take what the euros made and make it better and more reliable.

Though to be fair, Subaru has always been a decade behind on technology. In 2004 my WRX had one control module, the ECM. That's it. One. Everyone else had a half dozen doing tons of different things but subaru had one for the engine and relays for literally everything else in the car. I don't think they had traction control until 2007 or so. It's only been around since the late 80's, early 90's.

I think when you use traction control you no longer use limited slip diffs. Our 2002 Forester had a limited slip on the rear axle and it was god like in traction. One time I pulled out a Chevy 2500HD that got stuck down a hill. Subaru also liked viscous couplings etc instead. It wasn't digital modulation of the brakes and throttle but it worked. The STI had it on both front and rear axles if my memory is working correctly.
When safety moved beyond traction and started controlling vehicle dynamics, like making turns stable etc, Subaru changed to the brake and throttle control tech. I think that was a proper call.

I also consider the STI as the ultimate. So if they put a CVT in that I would be disappointed too, but the WRX not at all. Subaru stated they are trying to open the car up to a wider audience which will help assure the line will continue.

Another strong rumor is no more WRX hatchbacks... only sedans. Edit: I would rather have a hatch.

They could have simple traction control, that just controls the throttle. Has nothing to do with limited slip differentials.

It does a whole lot more, that's true, my WRX, even before having 450 hp would slip all four in the snow quite easily and that was somewhat treacherous. FWD plows, RWD does a 180. AWD slides out of control and spins like a top.

We had the Forester for 10 years before we upgraded to the G37x and never had any snow/ice issues. We did have a second set of wheels with snow and ice tires and used them every year. Of course 170 HP isn't anything like 300+ so that would be a different world.
I agree simple throttle control should have been possible.

Anyway, 6 speed manual is an option on the WRX, so nothing lost there unless someone asks for the CVT.

STI to be revealed next week in Detroit.

Looking forward to the STI reveal. I don't like how the WRX looks, but I'm hoping they change the STI version enough to improve it.

Aside from it looking like a beefed up Impreza with a more aggressive nose, What are the haters going to say about it being better handling than the old one, a little less hardcore than the old one, the CVT NOT sucking donkey nuts like CVT's usually do, and with a Six speed manual available.

Cue the 'its ugly' argument :)
Oh and no hatchback...dunno why they'd do that....
