mike,

i also recieved some info on a fix, i tried it and it still didn't work. ATI noted that my AZ-11 bios was outdated and that it could be the source of my problems. i'm going to try to flash the bios later and see if it helps.

thats ok, wait till you hear what they told me... This is not even possible as theres not an atigart in my startup files :( Didnt work, so back to square one.. anwyays heres what I was told:

go to VIA and get the file named VAGP403D.exe
Make sure you have the latest "current" BIOS installed

-reinstall the ATI driver (do not reboot)
-install the VAGP403D.exe driver (do not reboot)
-go to MSCONFIG and disable ATIGART
-reboot
-test 4X mode

ah well,,

Mike

I am on a bit of a time crunch as the 30 day return policy at fry's is running out for my motherboard (14 days for the chip) i need to get the radeon system working soon or i cant even return the board.

I think the problem is that the difference between run-time and load-time for the AGP drivers. What i think is going on is that the AGP drivers must be loaded when the computer loads windows not when computer is in windows (hence msconfig) I dont think that AGP drivers are loaded or can be disabled thru msconfig. I will be trying the bios upgrade to see if that solves the problem.

I found the atigart in the startup portion of the system config util (msconfig). I think you need to have the drivers (full) installed first, then after a reboot, reinstall the drivers without rebooting and then proceed with the other instructions. I'm going to try this if all fails.

I'm running;
Tyan Tiger 133
Dual PIII 800 (was dual boot 98/w2k)
256ram
Radeon 64mb

I now know that if you install the easy way, the atigart drivers are not installed. So my above entry is half correct. If you install custom, you can select the gart drivers. I chose express, checked for atigart (not there). I then rebooted, and install the VIA drivers ATI specified. When asked for the type of mode, my first choice was turbo. Bad choice. That caused a reboot toa black screen. After going back in safe mode, I reinstalled the VIA drivers. This time I selected the standard mode. I am now RUNNING!

Note;
I uninstalled the ATI drivers first, then ran a search for ATI*.* from the windows directory, then deleted them.
Rebooted x2 (you may see why)
Install driver as specified above.

Good luck and God speed!

Unfortunately,, installing standard will run you at 1X AGP... Check http://www.tweakfiles.com and dload a program called PCIList, this will let you see what mode you card is running it...

I give up for tonight,, also Jarrett please check your email, have something for ya :) Ill add more benchmarks once i get 4X AGP and a TBird 1000 in house...

Thanks,

Mike

Its a NO-go on the bios update. I updated the bios to version VDA43 and continue to get repeatable lock ups. I wonder what the heck is going on...

Oxide,, did you try what i mentioned installing the standard agp drivers instead of turbo?? I have nothing but trouble until I do this as well, I explained it a little better in my review (the exact procedure i went through to get my system stable...)

Mike

yeah mike i tried that. standard mode and turbo mode. It looks like it actually installed something this time instead of quickly giving me a prompt to reboot. do you have a link to your article?

yep,,

<A href="http://www.savagenews.com/articles/hardware/atiradeon/atiradeon.html">here</a>

Hopefully html tags work on here ;)
If this doesnt work it seems like you have a unique problem.. Id try going into cmos and changing your memory timings,, to Cas3, 10NS SDRAM, and turn off DRAM Bank Interleave to be safe... I bought more memory for my computer and had the stability problems...

Hope this helps you out,

Mike

I've got 256 Megs of corsair i can put it, but dont think its a memory problem. I think the Radeon does not work with AZ-11 motherboards. This would mean that all the new compaq PCs coming out using this board will not work with the ATI radeon. I'm reading your aticle now, thanks your all your help. Maybe ati can come up with something, since my AZ-11 was running fantastic with my G400 a few weeks ago. I'll keep you posted of any ATI responses.

Well, I have an Abit KT7-Raid and an Asus A7V that don't work either (Not even AGP 1x) under 98se. 2D and OpenGL work under Windows 2000. I've used a GeForce GTS. It can't play DVDs. It doesn't appear to be a vid board issue because both the boards work 100% on a K7V, and I've tried everything. My guess is Via still needs to get out the new (the ones several web sites reported to be new are not really new) drivers.
