I don't see why this couldn't work with our current monitors and a specialized tracking camera. Even now as I type this, I cannot make out the words or even shapes of things on my desktop in my peripheral vision. Though I would like to see a more accurate tracking grid, as 3x3 seems a bit low.
 
you would still need the hardware for it, pretty sure nvidia has this too. Valve's been testing an addon with the vive, probably won't release it but its just testing

sounds like a waste of investment and resources. why lower the quality of rendering? the end goal of doing this is so AMD/NVidia can invest less in the hardware, and offer your cheaper hardware that barely runs the game with a ton of hacks enabled to make it run.

they have the capability to produce hardware far superior than they're offering us, but won't in favor of introducing small upgrades every year with capability they already could have matched years or decades earlier, and they have created the low end and mid range to attempt to extort money by forcing everyone to buy the high-end when their hardware/software doesn't work without it. nothing like buying a cheap version that makes you cringe and wanna throw your laptop or desktop across the room because it runs like crap, forcing you to opt for the $3000 version next time to avoid the same experience.

umm I am not so sure about that, I think if AMD could potentially be years ahead of Nvidia they wouldn't be cutting back on everything including drivers, GPU development cycles etc.. AMD is offering great cards for 1080P gamers for relatively cheap prices. I think Nvidia is guilty of price gouging gamers with the GTX 1080 that was there mid range card and they were charging 6-700 dollars for it. Mostly because AMD had nothing to counter them with.
