any links?

not a download manager, I mean more of the tweaking sort ya know

I've tried loads with various effects
I'm on ADSL and I get max downloads between 45-80k/s depending on how I tweak my system

so any advice for a good proggy (freeware OR easy to crack :) )would be appriciated

I tried one of those programs a couple years ago. Like Pojo said, it would just cache ahead all the possible links on a web page. It didn't actually do anything for file downloads either, which is why I uninstalled it. A lot of programs like that come with some type of spyware too.

I've gotten faster downloads from GetRight before. It has a feature to download the same file from two or more different servers at once that works about half the time. It really pisses me off though when I spend a long time downloading a file, only to find that GetRight fvcked it up when it laced the two halves together.

The old versions of getright were REALLY bad about that, but I haven't had any trouble with the latest release... and with the amount of crap I download, that says alot ;) Check it out.

have you tweaked your registry (the mtu settings and such)? if not go to dslreports.com excellant site for bandwidth throughput diagnostics and registry tweaks, if i dont install my speed patch on a fresh 98 install i max out at around 40kilobytes/sec. after however ive downloaded as fast as 600kps.

To be honest the only thing that I have noticed make a difference is to break the HTTP 1.1 standard. This does give a speed up thats noticable when browsing. Everythign else is just a bunch of gimmick that dont really speed anything up. They just cache things ahead or while the machien is waiting for your input.

i agree i think 'web accelators' bog down your system, and not going to give you faster downloads just caches webpages.

go to www.speedguide.net and check their forums, those lads there helped me out a huge amount with various tweaks and patches

as to the difference...i was getting about 200-400 kbs/dl and 90 kb/sec up after my speed tweaks .. i average 2.5MB/sec dl and 420 kb/sec up( this is on cable)and have hit as much as 4.07MB/sec dl on some sites...ah broadband is so sweet indeed.
