ATI Radeon 4870's fullscreen video output is only 1024x768 resolution?

Hello.

On my 23" HDTV 1920x1080 monitor with ATI Radeon 4870 HD's VGA and DVI
connections on my very old Windows XP Pro SP3 computer, I cannot make
the fullscreen video overlays from video players more than 1024x768
resolution. Desktops are OK at 1920x1080. I know I can drag my video
players to the HDTV and manually fullscreen, but that is a pain because
I want to control the videos on my 1920x1080 computer monitor. Going
between windowed and fullscreen is annoying.

Is there a way to force the video driver's theater mode overlay to the
correct resolution so I can get the fullscreen video's aspect ratios
correct?

Thank you in advance. :)

1) did you research on getting the most stable/high performance version of the graphics driver for Win XP?

What video player are you using?

What cable are you using for the HDTV?

Oh yeah you have both DVI and VGA....DVI should work best.

Still using v8.6 since the newer drivers like to rarely random lock up my old machine hard. VLC, MPC, etc. VGA cables with DVI adapters.

You have a DVI input on the HDTV?

You have a DVI output on the Raddy 4780?

If not, then there may be a problem there.

I've seen this issue before but it was a laptop integrated gpu...the resolution always looked off...(that was vga to vga in/output

I never bothered with it because I instead used either a PlayStation 3 to view videos or used the USB ports if the HDTV was capable of video.

Although it sounds like there should be a solution...without checking right now there might be a limitation in how HDTVs VGA input handles the signal.

But the issue only happens if I use fullscreen video overlays from video players. If I just view my desktops only with extended desktops, then the resolution is fine. Manually putting the video players on the HDTV and going fullscreen keep the correct resolution. It is just the ATI's Home Theater's fullscreen video overlays are not showing resolutions correctly for fullscreen videos. :/

Damn...ok I would have thought it was probably not a driver issue...the best I can say is to check the driver version release notes to see if there was anything about video output issues.

Only if the newer drivers would stop hard locking my old computer up. Heh. Oh well. Thanks anyways. :)

what's the model number of your tv?

Samsung SyncMaster Series 3 T22B350.

is the system sending out a 1920x1080 signal through vga to your tv?
another option is to get a dvi->hdmi cable or a dvi male-> female hdmi adapter if you already have a HDMi cable hanging around.
Although your system should not be locking up if you do a driver upgrade which could mean hardware issues.

Yes for extended desktop with DVI->VGA connections, but not with ATI's Home Theater's fullscreen videos. Currently, if I want the true 1920x1080 resolution, I have to use the extended desktops and manually move my video players to the HDTV's desktop section and go fullscreen instead of the automatic fullscreen video overlays from ATI's Home Theater for videos. I do have HDMI cables, but they're short and I would needed to get longer ones and a DVI->HDMI adapter.

have you tried using your tv as the only (primary) monitor without extending the desktop? see if it does the same thing.
Also try MPC-HC software https://binaries.mpc-hc.org/MPC HomeCinema - Win32/MPC-HC_v1.7.10_x86/MPC-HC.1.7.10.x86.exe

Um, then how will I use my computer when I want to watch and use my computer at the same time. I want dual setup for both screens to multitask on a single desktop PC. Also, I am already using MPC-HC v1.7.10. :)

I forgot to mention that using clone desktop show the same problems.

mpc-hc has a feature comparable to the old ati theatre mode if that's what your after?

That was only a suggestion to try to see if the same issue develops. It wasn't meant as a permanent solution.

Also, can you set the TV as the Main/Primary and the monitor as the Secondary? I would think if you do this, and start the Video on the Primary screen, you can then use the Secondary screen for your Desktop use while watching the videos.
