Best way to play Half Life 2?

Och

ATI Champion
Just completed Black Mesa, and want to do HL2. I am sure there all kinds of improvements for it, what are some essential mods without going overboard?

I'd recommend at least The Half-Life 2:Update mod.

It fixes many of the things Valve has broken over the years, or where always broken, with engine updates. While also cleaning up, updating and modernizing other elements without changing the look and art style of the original game.

Honestly, I would just play the game. The core game itself has had updates like Trunks0 said above. Unsure what's been broken.

At this point I would expect any integrated graphics would be able to crank it.

I second HL2 Update. I played through it last year and the lighting alone makes it worth it. Not even close to the stock install.

Original xbox version ftw!

Actually I really enjoyed the xbox360 version. Surprisingly good with a controller.

If I were to replay HL2 I think I'd just have gone for the vanilla version on Steam, but this looks pretty cool too! Gonna see if I can find some time to go for this one.

It's super subtle what changed or was fixed. Which leaves the game as intended really and it looks great. I've actually just started playing through it myself in 32:9.

You can see the comparison trailer here for some of the changes\fixes

Posted some screens from my current play through into the screenshots thread. You can see them here

gtx 3090, with RAY TRACING
and at like 600fps. at 4k resolution

Otherwise the game looks like pure unplayable garbage.

:bleh:

cinematic mod is good if you can turn off the crappy sexualized character models it added. Also newer versions seem to add so much bloom that you need sunglasses.

Playing HL2 update, but some textures look pretty 90ies. Is there a good texture pack?

Don't forget to turn on some sharpening and AO in the nvidia control panel as well. I use 0.15 sharpening for older games like this.

Yes AO looks great in this, but iirc for HL2:Update you need to enable it in HL:Source profile in NVCP, not regular HL2 profile. Just enable it in both to be sure..

Best way to play Half Life 2.

Play it once :nag: .

 it's kinda funny you say that. Because as I play through for the first time in a really long time I'm reminded of how much I hate big sections of this game. The whole section in the fan boat for instance, which is really early in the game is really kinda boring and way WAY to long.
