California to ban new gas car sales by 2035

Stupid as can be.

I don't really see it that way.

Massive heat waves are going to keep getting worse as a direct result of carbon emissions and global climate change. A thing that will keep getting worse the longer we put off doing something about it. We keep saying things like "unprecedented" to describe things that are now happening basically every single year.

So yeah, a massive heat wave is putting a strain on the energy grid.

California's banning of gas powered internal combustion engines car sales is the right thing to do. The alternative is that regulation at the state or federal level continues to be afraid of being too heavy handed. They continue to let the markets do what markets do. And the markets decide maybe that it's more profitable to maybe not get rid of internal combustion engine vehicles.

Criticizing California for trying to deal with a climate change related problem in the short term, while also longer term steps to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. acroig edit: attacks removed

California has been having "Massive heat waves " for hundreds of years

and their power grid has been F***ed fo 50+ years

maybe fix the power grid and power generation problems first before making another mess :hmm:

this is all that they think they can force the auto makers to go all EV to force other states
those other states can pass laws also requiring both

and i bet dollars to doughnuts there is a loop hole you can drive a 300k plus sports car thru that burns 3 gallons per mile

all those hollywood elites and CEO's aren't going to give up those new Ferrari, Lamborghini and Mclaren and so on

Smart of them to be connected to the grid, no? TX knows better I guess.

i don't know the only time we lost power here in Phoenix for more than a hour since 1974 that i have been here was California's fault
we were out for about 10 hours :bleh:

No one is going to want a luxury gas car like that in 2035 when an electric equivalent will outperform it in every way. EVs are just better technology.

It's the same reason we're typing on keyboards connected to a computer, rather than writing letters on a typewriter and mailing them to each other.

yes they will

the midlife crisis cars will never be EV .

California's heatwaves have been getting worse, and will continue to get worse, as climate tends towards warming. That's just what the science says. Declaring that they've had heatwaves in the past doesn't mitigate that they're having worse heatwaves now, and these extreme weather conditions will continue to get worse if drastic steps aren't taken.

Key Points
  • SoCal urban heatwave activity is increasing at a rapid rate with a greater tendency towards more humid and intense nighttime events
  • Heatwaves are persisting later in the year during peak fire season, potentially increasing the intensity of wildfires by enhancing aridity
  • Heatwaves have high probability of increasing by 42% in frequency, 26% in duration, and 2°C in temperature during severe drought conditions

Source - AGU: Rising Trends in Heatwave Metrics Across Southern California

Hulley and colleagues published a study in July 2020 showing how heatwaves became more frequent, intense, and longer-lasting in Southern California from 1950 to 2020. Using ground-based data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the team examined temperatures over inland urban, rural, and coastal urban areas. Heatwave activity showed the largest change in inland urban areas such as Los Angeles County, which Hulley said is most likely because they are farther away from coastal breezes and because urban areas act as heat islands—consisting of less cooling vegetation and more heat-absorbing surfaces (roads, buildings) that re-radiate heat stored during the daytime.

The graphs below show the number of heatwaves per year, the duration, and the intensity for inland urban areas from 1950 to 2020. The dotted line represents the average value of three heatwave definitions currently accepted by the research community. The shaded areas show the standard deviation. Intensity is calculated as the maximum temperature during a heatwave minus the average heatwave temperature.

So, again it seems weird that we'd criticize California for trying to curb a problem in the long term while trying to deal with a short term problem caused by the long term problem.

Unless we'd just prefer a solution where we just let the market do whatever it does, and whatever happens to the planet just happens? So long as there's profits to be made in the short term then who cares? That cannot possibly be the right answer here. :hmm:

But that's fine right? Fewer internal combustion engines overall is where we want to end up. Hobbyists here and there can do whatever they want as long as it's not the majority of cars on the road.

We also don't really use horses for public transit because technology left those behind a hundred years ago. But there are people, here and there, who still have horses, and that's fine.

you ever come over a hill in Ohio and find a amish horse and buggy
they are more of them than people think

then there are the off roaders the big 4X4's they will never be EV

maybe California should make everyone cycle to work or horse and buggy :hmm:

Maybe federal assistance for bike purchases.

:bleh:

I had no idea what the answer to Cali’s problems are, but someone needs to suck it up and invest heavily in grid repair and supplementation. Nothing will improve much without that I think.

This may be true but there could be a day where they aren't allowed in national parks. They did get rid of 2 stroke snow mobiles due to the noise and pollution.

To anyone that owns an EV, is one pedal driving something that really takes getting used to? Just watched a Waveform clips video that talks about the silly things getting built into EV's to help ease the transition (like the "engine noise" on the Dodge muscle cars EV's and the fake sense of shifting and creeping forwards when you let off on the brakes). They said you can turn it off on Tesla's and the Ionique cars have paddles shifters that adjust the amount of regen. Just curious since we're all going to be driving one someday.

Yeah it sucked that incentives for e-bikes got cut. Who knows, if we add more of the right people, that could come back in another bill.

I thought it would be weird and take a while to get used to. But a friend visiting with his Tesla Model 3 let me take it out on the road after a quick few minutes in a parking lot showing me the ropes and it was not hard at all. You get a feel for it really fast and then it feels pretty natural. I would say it took me maybe just a few miles and a few traffic light stops before I got a feel for it and then forgot I was doing it within 15 minutes.

:yep:

and if they want people to go solar kill the tax credits and go back to full 100% net metering .

and stop stop limiting solar Kw on your house

and letting power co tax you

APS also charges a monthly fee of $0.93 per kilowatt DC power that your system is rated for. Thus a 10-kilowatt system will be charged a monthly fee of $9.30
