Catalyst v5.6 and Alienware 7700

I noticed that catalyst v5.6 now supports the mobile X700 and X800 graphic cards. Unfortunately, ATI also lists only 5 laptop manufacturers that they 'suggest' are compatable. I have a alienware laptop 7700...(not on the list). My question is if it would be safe to try installing them on my alienware? In other words...I am assuming that the worst case is that I would have to reinstall my current drivers (catalyst v4.12 modded for laptop). Anyone have any suggestions, comments?

Thanks

Gary

P.S. I have the X800 Mobility ATI graphics adapter

I'm still puzzled as to how 4.12s support your card, are they like the first set to do so? I would give them a try, I don't see why they shouldn't support your laptop while they support others...

The v4.12's are modded. This allows them to be used on my laptop. I believe that the first post on this site explains how to mod the catalyst drivers to work with your laptop. Hope this helps.

Sorta answered my own question. The new catalyst v5.6's do indeed work on my alienware 7700, X800 mobility graphics chip. I think I can finally upgrade from my v4.12's that I have stuck with for so long.

The Catalyst 5.6 Mobility Driver works with ALL Mobility Chips of the RadeOn Series.
The Test-Utility seems to just check what manufacturer ur notebook is from, and if not listed, deny download for the Driver.
But u can download the driver here:

http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/index.html

It installed without any error on my Toshiba with an Mobility 9700! In fact it's the same driver as the complete package for the desktop cards. U just spare modding the drivers with the MobilityModder. The package is only available with the CCC!

Did you install the catalyst 5.6 mobile driver with removing first the old driver or just install it anyway without removing the old driver? I have IBM T-43 with X300 Mobile Radeon and planning to update my driver (original driver) but I need assurances first.

I know all about modding, but the you cannot mod lets say a 4.1 and expect it to work properly with an X800. These are new GPUs and are optimized to work with the latest drivers. I'm not sure about the timeframe when the X series were introduced so the 4.12s may be among the first set of drivers to support them. I would much rather use a later 5.xx catalysts with them.
