Cats and Dogs

Mind I have always had dogs in the family since I was a kid so I ought to have some bias here and there, but being a current owner of two cats, I do have some thoughts.

Although my girlfriend love our cats to bits, I find I only feel them as "cute creatures we take care of" and don't actually share any sort of personal connection with them.

Call me stupid, but I never expected such a drastic difference between cats and dogs. My former poodle being a total nightmare to live with aside, literally all my other dogs were loving, altruistic, and heartwarming family members. Nevermind my Shiba Mickey, who obviously loves me wholeheartedly.

We got another cat because our first appeared constantly aloof. Thought she was depressed. Never did I imagine they both turned out that way.

I don't know man. Don't mean to be cold, but my cats are the single most entitled, selfish, and manipulative animals I have ever seen. Whatever happened to all those stories about some cats being all lovable like dogs? I just don't see it. It's like they are treating me and the girlfriend like servants.

I mean, they do have their adorable moments but being more sanitary as dogs aside, I just don't see the hype. :bleh:

the old battle where there never will be a winner. They are completely different and that is actually the great thing about them.

Personally i'm a cat person, always was, always will be. I don't hate dogs, i just prefer cats. In the end it's just personal preferences as usual. Both dogs and cats can be loving, caring pets...or they both can be pests like nothing else.

Cats can be selfish and prone to do their own thing, but they can also be pretty loving. All the cats I've owned had their own personalities. We had one that would literally jump away if you picked it up when we first got it. Eventually it liked being held. Give them love and they'll reciprocate eventually.

you need to invest lots of time in cats

uhm, no. Dogs are a LOT more on the "needy" side, well, at least that's my experience. Cats tend to do ther own thing, they decide if they like you or not. There are some races that are clingy, yes, but most are not. Dogs tend to be a lot more dependant on humans.

just my 2 cents, as always

Personal preference. I’ve had quite a few of both. My cats, one in particular, was an amazing companion, but I do prefer a good canine.

I do have to say that (my personal opinion) if the choice is being based on which one is easier to care for, requires less effort….a big part of the point of having one is being missed. Both animals can be wonderful companions, it just comes down to which you’re drawn to.

yep, it never should be about "effort". But i thought that would be self-explanatory, maybe i was wrong. Companion is a better and more fitting word than pet.

I currently have 1 cat and 2 dogs (Aussies). They get along exceptionally well. The dogs are definitely needy and neurotic, but they are unconditionally affectionate. Our cat is the most snugly, affectionate cat we've ever had. But she's still very independent doesn't obey 99% of the commands we give her. She's a great mouser, though. Since we live in the sticks, that's a huge plus.

There is an old saying, and I think it's generally true. "Dogs have masters. Cats have servants." You just have to decide which one you'd rather be.

Dogs are like children
Cats are like adults.

If a dog chooses you, you are its master.
If a cat chooses you, you are its servant.

come home from a long day:
Dog = MASTER! MASTER IS HOME!!! YAY HUGS KISSES BELLY RUBS! LETS PLAY NOW!
Cat = WHERE THE F*** HAVE YOU BEEN FOR SO LONG?????? FEED ME NOW MINION!

Cats are actually very very smart and can learn a lot of tricks too.....if they want to  Cats are also not made to obey anything or anymore.

In the end it comes down to this: A home without them always feels kinda empty, even more if you had one before.

cat-vs-dog

My mom has had plenty of cats over the years, and only one behaved like what people say cats should behave like, the rest were quirky dogs.

Father in law had a cat that would run out to the road to nuzzle our dog when walking past the house.

My wife's cat was an indoor cat and fairly affectionate. Did Not appreciate us bringing a dog into the house and lived the rest of its life in the basement.

 great points guys! Keep em' coming!

Hope they will change with time and effort. Though seeing how my girlfriend spoils them like she is a willing servant or something, I kinda doubt it. :p

our old cat even joins us when i take the dogs for a walk. People always laugh when they see us. He surprised us with how fast he made friends with all the cats in our town, we expected a LOT more fights.

I’ve seen cats on leashes being walked before.
