Console for a 5 year old

Best console for a 5 yo is called play outside.

Bingo

It’s called an imagination. Tell him to use it and imagine himself playing a switch

This, a thousand times.

This as well.

Not a popular view, but kids get too much screen time. Heck, even adults do nowadays. Also...
Some research suggests that screen time can have lots of negative effects on kids, ranging from childhood obesity and irregular sleep patterns to social and/or behavioral issues.

If you must get a console, I'd go with a used WII console/game bundle. You can get them for cheap off eBay or a local Gamestop. Lots of great games and you actually have to move around to play most of them.

Atari 2600. Seriously.

Simple games. Direct objectives. Imagination required.

You guys are describing my childhood.

Unfortunately, outside here is insufferable.
100+F with heat index and humidity between late May - Early Sep, then the little guy is allergic to every type of grass and pollen out there.
We have 2 good weeks of weather/year where either the heat, then sudden cold, allergies, or bugs wont get you.

I tried reasoning with him yet again (as much as one can w/a 5 year old) by showing him other and older consoles, but he can easily distinguish among them.

It may be Switch or bust...

Can't disagree with all the "go outside" comments. It's sad to drive through neighborhood and never see kids playing outside any more. It's all about balance though. I had an NES given to me and my brother for XMas at around 5yrs old, and we turned out just fine.

It's all about balance. Some days our parents would yell at us to get out of the house, other times we couldn't wait to get out there. We were out more than in, and even with all the video gaming we did...there's still an appreciation for travel and outdoors today.

But I hear ya...eliminate the distractions in the first place and don't have to worry about it.

Eh, I'd say spare the guy the parenting advice.

He came to a gaming forum for suggestions on a game console for his kid. I think we can leave the parenting suggestions to other places.

Definitely a switch. My son is 5, I bought him one and he loves it. The vast majority of the games are kid friendly, and age appropriate as well.

To my surprise, he actually prefers PC over console, has to be genetic.
Still on the fence about what to get or not get.

Does it have to be now? You could compromise and get him one after the first markdown (assuming that's happening within the year.) Games will be cheaper too.

Or you could let him call the shots. :)

Nintendo tends not to lower anything from hardware to games, but there is talk of an updated switch next year which may lower the price of the original.

Certainly not opposed to lower prices.
I'll admit, I spoil them (perhaps to a fault).

Bought his sister and him 2018 128GB iPads, so that should hold them over -- as well as a smart TV for their playroom.

I figured with the Black Friday deals, this may be the best time to bite the bullet and just get the Switch as well.

If prices do not lower anytime soon, this may be as good a time as any to just get it.
