Coronavirus research

It's great to see everyone paying attention to this project again.

Too bad there isn't enough work to go around at the moment though. My computer has been sitting idle for the last couple days. After a while it only checks for work 4 times a day and it's not finding any when it does look.

I guess I should pause then unpause it every so often so it'll keep looking for work more often.

My Vega 64 keeps blowing up. I like its performance but FFS does it run hot. Until I started this, putting my case fans at max was enough to keep it stable. I suppose it's never run at 100% utilization for two hours straight before.

The problem is when it crashes due to heat, the GPU fans kick on to max while everything else shuts down. It stays like that until I power cycle the PC. I am not comfortable leaving this running when I'm out of the house, so when (if) telework ever ends, my stats are going to slow or stop.

Anyway I delved into the advanced fan tuning - fans kick to 100% at 75C. We'll see how this goes...

Feels good to see the Coronavirus Project down there. :3

Also that's what they get for using my slow ass 4 year old CPU. Ugh, well, least it's doing work!

Wow my Core 2 Quad munches faster than that... heh

Edit:

Xeon E5440 4/4 @ 3.4Ghz: 2,869PPD <- Basically a C2Q 9650
Radeon 560 @ 1.3/1.9: 44,669PPD <- It's a 1024 piper 4GB edition, designed to only draw power from the PCI-e slot

i7 8750H 6/6 @ 2Ghz: 4,752->1,830PPD <- Notebook load balancing ftl! but AVX256 ftw!
Quadro P2000M stock: 32,703PPD <- Seems the COVID-19 research is either CPU or CUDA only

I'm using my work machine to fold as it's my only NV machine I have access too at the moment.

If not getting WU's I found, hitting Pause, wait a minute, then hitting finish in the advanced control seems to have the best chance of getting WUs. Since it seems to force the system to re-register the system.

Well, I'm about to throw my video card through my neighbor's brick wall. I've pulled enough hair out of my head trying to keep it from crashing (and then corrupting the WU it's been working on, getting rejected by the server). I still assume it's heat related.

Going to run it on my CPU only. We'll be missing out on 120,000 PPD but we've been missing out on that anyway.

Are you running your V64 on any kind of overclock?

Is it a blower monster?

I would really suggest looking at underclocking and undervolting it. The HBM on the 64 should be able to do 900mhz at 0.900V. I'd pull the core back to 1.1 or even 1.0Ghz. just to see if simply dropping the clocks helps it. Vega 56/64 were always best when you could slightly underclock them and undervolt them appropriately.

That would be my suggestion. It really sounds like it desperately needs a repaste/cleaning.

No overclock. Overnight, I undervolted and underclocked it with the GPU fan tuned to be aggressive. Heat makes sense but I wonder if my PSU isn't showing signs of crapping the bed.

That's very possible, it may not be appreciating the sustained loads, and it struggles to keep up.

How old and what kind of PSU is it?

Upgrade to the new 20.3.1 driver that just showed up. I saved my profile on the tuning page of the Radeon settings then reset them before hitting the update button. After the update I reapplied my profile before restarting FAH.
Running 2c cooler on the same wu. Didn't even need to log out or reboot.

15 months old. eVGA G3 Gold 750 Watt.

I've been running that for five days. That's what I used to undervolt/underclock and control the fan. With finagling, I can get mine to run at 74C when it's used to running at 78, but it still crashed overnight which is what's leading me away from the GPU overheating being the issue. Except that when it crashes, the fan kicks to max and pushes my tower off my desk (not really), which according to some random people on the internet is a sign the GPU is in self preservation mode. :runaway:

A larger problem is when my case exhaust fans are on low and the GPU fan is 25% or higher, it actually sucks air in through the exhaust fans. The PSU is mounted at the bottom, pushing air out that way. This could be creating an airflow dead zone somewhere over my RAM/north bridge - which would mean it's time for a new case where the PSU is mounted at the top like normal configs.

I'm really not cut out for this.

I don't think this driver was out 5 days ago. Are you sure your not on the 20.2.2?
AMD posted it to the website today. Radeon settings reports released on the 17th.

Well I hope it's an air flow issue and not a hardware related issue.

I am running 20.2.2. I got the notification and/or noticed the 20.2.2 for the first time five days ago. Another bad assumption.

Also, I misread the idea about the 2C reduction - thought you were talking about the added controls that you could apply to profiles.

I'll give the new drivers a shot when my CPU finishes this core.

On the bright side, my gaming laptop is capable of pushing 50k PPD. The downside is everything the 1060 GPU crunches gets rejected by the server (Message: Server didn't like results. Dumping.).

Why you... :D

I would've replied sooner if I hadn't locked myself out. :embarrassed:

And thanks for your help DarkFoss.

Hey it looked like you were going to have a real chance at overtaking me until...

(Same from me @ DarkFoss.)

With DarkFoss's suggestions, I downloaded the new beta drivers. Did a clean install. Without baselining, I went ahead and selected the Power Saving preset before starting GPU folding again.

It's been going for five hours now and the GPU hasn't broken 75C. No crashes. I can't put into words the elation I feel when I come downstairs and still see my keyboard lights are still on. I see from the wattage it's pulling (165W -vs 205W) that I was not nearly as aggressive as I needed to be when I underclocked/undervolted it. Even strange is that my GPU PPD has increased by 24k to 144.4k. I only have six guesses as to why this could be.

Thanks for everyone's help and interest with my hardware issues. I hope this is my last post about anything related to it.

Crawdaddy79, are you using a passkey?

Because your base and estimated credit look the same. With a passkey the estimated credit should be much higher based on the quick return bonus.

Therefor you should get loads more PPD

Good tip. After adding the passkey five minutes ago it's estimating 750k PPD and still climbing as it averages out.

That answers a number of questions I had about other peoples' scores.

Sweet I'm glad that seems to have sorted things out! If you need WHQL version you may want to file a bug report so the fix gets passed into the main branch. Judging by the fah forum posters your not the only one with crash issues with the 20.2.2 driver, some even experience blackscreen/lockups with hardware acceleration enabled in their browser. Also your Vega's TPF is around 2 min 22 sec faster than my Fury with those 14xxx wu's.

Nice catch! If you need to recover or create a new passkey can do so at the apps page.

So close....

It actually usually bounces around 920k - 950k but just noticed it at 99xxxx and got excited.

The Estimated TPF of Project 14308= 27.00 secs

I know the Vega is faster than a Fiji but 6 min faster Holy@#?!

Code:
Project: 14310 (Run 583, Clone 3, Gen 2)
18:13:02:WU00:FS01:0x21:Completed 250000 out of 25000000 steps (1%)
18:19:18:WU00:FS01:0x21:Completed 500000 out of 25000000 steps (2%)
18:25:32:WU00:FS01:0x21:Completed 750000 out of 25000000 steps (3%)
18:31:46:WU00:FS01:0x21:Completed 1000000 out of 25000000 steps (4%)
Grats Crawdaddy79 :fold:

Hey Lupine if ya get one of these 14308's I'd like to know how much better your TPF is with your Ryzen. I think :hmm:
