Demon Soul (PS3)

Yeah, so I talked to my friend and told him that I am not ready for this game yet being a console noob, so he gave me the receipt from Gamestop and I was able to return it (used game he bought for me 2 days ago) and I got Star Wars Force Unleashed 1 for $2 out of my pocket, loving this game so far.

In time I'll get Demon Souls though, it looks like it can be fun
keep waiting, they're going to close the servers, and you'll never get a chance to play.

Sure it is. In fact, most of the time, you'll be playing alone. Black Phantoms can't invade while you are in soul form, so no loss there. The game is just as enjoyable as a single player experience.
Imo it's not as great when you lose the possibility of invading other people's games.

Good news everyone!
Just got this email:

Hey guys, I received Dark Souls for Christmas but never played Demon souls. Heck I also received the new Batman game but never played the first one.

So I went out and bought both the originals today (cheap - nice). I figured I would do:
-Demon Souls
-Batman 1
-Dark Souls
-Batman 2

Anyway - so I started playing Demon souls today and I had a couple of questions:

1) in the "you're dead world" there's some really bad a$$ knight dude in there that takes all my health out in a single direct spear hit. He's on some bridge that goes to another building thing. I tried lighting my sword on fire and throwing fire bombs on him. It even looks like that sucker heals himself. WTF? I can't figure out if you're suppose to come back much later or I just suck.
2) I tried buying a crossbow to show that guy and kite him. I don't get the crossbow and I'm thinking I would have the same issue with spells. It's like you have to get really close to the enemies to target them so you can actually shoot them, but you're so close you're darn near in melee range to start with. Are ranged attacks actually worthwhile in this game?
3) With melee, is the only option to use a shield? I tried wielding a 2H weapon or two weapons and it seems like you take so much damage it's not feasible at all. The only play style that seems to work is holding your shield up and waiting for them to attack and then getting a hit or two in... ?
4) is the whole dang game in spirit form? I mean there's like a crap load of those things you click on for areas... like the whole game is played in death mode. Is the majority of the game in spirit form or do you actually go back and spend most of your time "alive"?

Funny - this game is the first game I've played in a long time that makes me want to throw my controller against the wall. In general I like it though. The price of #1 was freaking awesome.

I tried looking up some tutorial stuff but mostly I've just seen detailed build advice for PVP play and such. I need like a total newb guide. I did find the ring thing that increase your health in spirit form.

Thanks.

I almost want to suggest NOT playing Demon's Souls. To me, Dark Souls is superior in just about every way and I had a much better experience playing that. You don't need to play Demons to play Dark at all, it stands alone pretty well.

If you are a gamer chances are you will want to play both for their addictive atmosphere, gameplay etc... without Demon's Souls there would be no Dark Souls.

Also both games are different, if Demon's Souls gets a sequel it will not be the same as a Dark Souls sequel.

Thread necro - just bought this, and am about an hour into it.

Love it. Love it. Love it.

Wish I had played this before Dark Souls, but making up for lost time is good too. :)

The game is fantastic. I spent soo many hours playing. Sadly, I have the Chinese version (got it before the US version was released), so I can't play with you.

You asked about the leveling thing; you need to kill the first boss before you can level up. Then the trainer will appear in the Nexus.

Beware of the going-human thing. Dying in the world changes the world tendency and makes enemies harder to kill. You will learn to play with the low health. Some encounters in the worlds are dependent on the world tendency, play the game once and then check those from the wiki. Manipulating the world tendency is time-consuming.

Upgrading weapons is much more complicated in this one. I suggest you look at the wiki early on. It can be too confusing otherwise. There is something like 14 upgrade paths, and farming stones is hard. Armors cannot be upgraded.

Edit; I have an international version, so I might be able to help you if you get stuck somewhere. We live on quite different timezones though, that is a problem. I'm at UTC+3 hours. You are a seasoned Souls veteran now, so I expect you to survive.

lviz - Loving this game so far, and am already showing early signs of massive addiction :D Got 2 builds going so far, I wanted to see how these feel as compared to DaS. Barbarian is what I expected, a little slower, but good strength, can one-shot most enemies right out of the gate.

Royalty - even though she's SL1, is turning out to be very potent. Easily took out the red eyed knight and her ranged attack is sweet, and with the cling ring and fragrant ring the low health is balanced out.

Thought I was getting to the first level boss in the castle, but ran into a fork in the road lol. One path leads to massive loot that I can see, but 2 dragons, the other has a bunch of bad guys with 1 of the dragons flying over to keep me off of the bridge. So I'm luring them down 1 by 1 and am guessing after they're all dead it will be a sprint to safety to get past the dragon.

I read up on the upgrades a bit. Apparently I need the red hot demon's soul to give to the blacksmith?

Looks like I have a lot to learn, more complex than DaS, but also a ton of fun. Rescued that guy from the dredglings, found a couple loot I can't figure out how to get to yet....

Yeah, I foresee this purchase as lasting me a good long time. :D

Skip the royalty. The game's way too easy that way for you. Instead start a hunter (bows rule and have their own upgrade path) or wanderer (dex builds).

Study the behaviour of the dragon on the bridge (what triggers its appearance) before you commit. You need to be quite fast to avoid getting roasted.

You only need the red hot demon's soul for advanced upgrades. Basic upgrades can be done with just stones by either of the smiths. Red hot demon is the Flamelurker of which I posted the video some time ago.

The game is indeed a whole lot more complex than DaS. I've played through DeS about 3 times, and still haven't done everything. The world tendency manipulation is really a pain.

You aren't kidding on the royalty class. I just beat the tower knight easily and from the looks of him he should have been pretty tough. I'll save the build for later though, but hunter sounds interesting. Love having a +15 longbow in DaS, just enjoy using it.

The dragon wound up being fairly easy, withe the only rough patch actually getting into the tower knight's keep. Wasn't sure how far up I needed to be to avoid the dragon's flame, so I dove into that whole pile of enemies swinging like crazy. Had no idea there were 2 knights in there until it was too late. Did not end well :p Got through pretty quickly though.

Thanks for the tips on upgrades, looking forward to the flamelurker  and those little blob things around the phalynx seem good for stone farming. Phalynx was funny - I ran into the room not knowing what to expect (HUGE doorway usually means HUGE boss), and I was like "Hey, I know you!"

This game is a hoot, but the whole world tendency thing...I have the basic idea down and it seems there are ways to speed up transitioning from one to the other, but oy, it sounds like a royal pain. I think I'll see how a play through goes without even worrying about it.

Tower Knight needs a few tricks, if you play melee. I won't tell you what they are. With magic there's just no way to die.

Do you have the sounds working properly? The atmosphere is a whole lot better than that of DaS IMO. Go visit the Shrine of Storms to see, and hear. There's good loot also, and a "friend" you know from DaS. Valley of Defilement is DeS's version of Blighttown, so you don't want to go there too early.

I do, and I agree. I have it running through my pc satellite speakers and it sounds incredible.

On the tower knight, betting I know what the tricks are. I had to dance around him a bit before I realized my +1 scimitar wasn't going to bother him an awful lot. Almost got trapped by those big feet lol. I was also trying to be extra careful as I was carrying several thousand souls and didn't want to lose them.

Looking forward to the shrine of storms, sounds interesting - but I think I'll start that hunter build and work my way back to where I am now first. I think I'm comfortable enough to pick a build and plow through to the bitter end now

Last little note, not really game related - PS3 controller is a whole different ballgame than the xbox controller, much, much more comfortable using it. :)

:yep:

Also, I have to agree with you dropping Royalty, casters were really overpowered for PvE in DeS. :bleh:

Tower of Latria is also quite spectacular. The wife always tells me to put on my headphones when I go there. She says that it's too creepy. Come to think of it, most of the worlds are good. Except Valley of Defilement. Damn you From Software for your love of poisonous swamps and dark places.
