Dragon Quest 11

I'm buying it, looks like it's really good.

The music seems to be awful though, why the **** are they using some shitty midi soundtrack for one of their bigger titles while a smaller one like octopath traveler have an orchestrated one?

Good question. There's always that 1 element that even great games always screw up. In this one it's music.

Got to play for a bit today having fun so far. Kinda wish that I went with the PS4 version just to be able to suspend the console. I've become accustomed to being able to save anywhere. On the other hand it's a pretty looking game in 4k.

My ONLY gripe so far is the MIDI background music. I get the nostalgia factor but MY GOD it's annoying. I found it's tolerable if you turn the music volume down to 4 or 5.

Other than that it's pretty fun. I play it for an hour or two before bed and I can see it keeping my interest for a long time.

I've played quite a few jrpgs on the psx and to a lesser extent PS2. This game is everything that I've been hoping for in a jrpg for the longest time. I have no regrets picking this up over Spiderman.

Same here. Starts off slow but it’s pretty damn good. I’ll pick up Spider-Man after I platinum this one.

I have to agree, I turned the music all the way down to 2, but to be fair, I think the problem is more about composing quality than recording\playback quality. With the exception of DQ8's overworld theme, I don't think I've ever cared for DQ's music. I played through the Zenithian trilogy on DS earlier in the year, and I had the sound off most of the time.

I don't think I would be a fan of some of the tracks even if they were orchestrated TBH, but they would at least be more tolerable.

Something about the midi soundtrack feels wrong, plenty of ps1 games still used midi tracks, but they sounded better than this 2018 release.

It's the composer he refuses to use anything else in the games because the songs are pretty much his. They're so iconic with the franchise which is incredibly popular in Japan, that they have no choice but to give into his demands.

He does have Orchestrated versions available on CD and for live performances but he doesn't let them in the game fearing they will canabilize his sales.

Everyone in Japan, even non nerds know Dragon Quest and it's theme tune.

and yes I hate the midi music too.

I like that this game implements active time battles. It lets you be more reactive than proactive so you waste fewer turns doing the wrong thing. I actually like that (so far) the game is easier than passed DQs. In old DQs, you grind for hours, go to a new town, and find every new piece of equipment is out of your price range, then venture into a cave to get beat by a boss so badly you may have well have not grinded at all.

I know speed running RPGs isn't that popular, but the free refills with every level is such of big gift to the speed running community.

Are metal slime appearances based your your level? I found 3 - 4 metal slimes with 1 in 3 green dragon encounters until I hit level 26, then they just stopped. Then in the library, I was encountering liquid metal slimes every six encounters until they just stopped showing up.

Nope, their appearance is random.

You can farm them once you get J&R in your party. There’s a pep power with the hero/S/J which will swap out the enemies in the current battle for slimes your level.

You're right, the electrolite pep is definitely leveled, but I was refering to metals from random encounters. I've noticed this again with the metal hands in the volcano, so I'm pretty sure at this point their appearances are limited by something.

I don't know TBH. Everything I've read everywhere says their appearance is totally random. Would love to do a more scientific analysis of it but I have about 40 more hours of game left to complete it

Maybe after I platinum I'll look into it more.

Haven’t played in 2 weeks due to traveling for work. Probably won’t be able to play for another 2. I miss it. I played before bed and it was better than reading a book.
