Dragons Dogma PC Discussion

Everyone here still enjoying the game?

I am thinking about starting over since my PSU problems (now resolved) seemed to have stunted my enjoyment and pacing with this game. I have 10 hours or so logged but that entire time was plagued by my system crashing so I could never really play for long enough to enjoy and get into it.

Overall as it stands right now I find the game very bland and boring. I've done a bunch of random fetch quests, explored a couple different routes on the map and made it to the big city, and even tried that Bitterblack Isle area which was a good challenge. But honestly I am not finding the game all that fun.

I did the Everfall dungeon underneath Gran Soren last night. I guess it was OK.

I don't know maybe I should have picked a different character class. I'm using a fighter and its just kind of blah. The combat and hit detection is decent for an RPG, but I don't like the lack of any lock on mechanic. I find myself having to run in circles to face enemies often, and to get my shield to face their attacks. Unless I missed it this game really needs a way to stay facing your opponent during combat. I'm getting slashed in the back or side a lot.

This game encourages you to switch classes; in particular, getting augmentations from different classes. For example, any characters depending on physical damage would greatly benefit from having warrior augmentations, which require them to max out their warrior vocation; from my limited experience, warrior is a boring class to play -- I find it pretty annoying.

From my limited experience, I feel that "dagger and bow" classes ("yellow" classes, including hybrids) are most fun to play. I agree that the lack of target lock is annoying, though (I tend to overuse auto-tracking attacks to compensate it) -- it is not like they used up all the possible controller bindings. The same goes for lack of quick items -- going to inventory (which pauses the game) every time you want to use something is immersion breaking.

Otherwise, the game itself is pretty good. Pawn system is innovative, and combats work pretty well. There aren't many dungeons, though what they have are good (much better than any action RPGs that are not Soul games -- actually, the same goes for the combat as well). Quests and exploration are so-so, though not as bad as I expected, to be honest.

Thanks for the tips, Woodgypsy. I'm sure the game has its merits, and is worth playing. But yeah I feel I just need to try other classes.

This game has pretty awesome soundtrack, especially in boss fights.

I also liked the combat as Strider class.

I have not finished the game yet but here are couple of observations:
- the game is pretty thin in content but the gameplay is solid
- combat is much better than Witcher 3
- game feels a bit like a proof of concept (which works for me) which was quickly assembled to "finished" product status and shipped
- pawn system is much deeper than what it sounds like in descriptions and in most reviews and carefully selecting your pawns has huge effect on how fast you mown down mobs and bosses
- UI is atrocious, took me 10 hours to get used to it somewhat and even after 30 hours I sometimes go to wrong menu to search something or try to bring up quest menu with TAB or map with M

Overall I feel this game is well worth 30€ if you enjoy the gameplay but if you can't get in it has not much more going for it. For me it's great value but then again my taste in games is pretty different from mainstream gamer.

Patch #1 Release Notes

Added 1366x768 resolution support
Game should no longer have intermittent controller device detection issues when multiple devices are plugged in. This should address some of the stutter and input issues reported by users including spell/charge attacks not releasing, character ceasing to run etc.
Lantern binding issue - When full lantern becomes half-full, it will still be bound to the hotkey. (previously "half full" and "empty" were treated as separate inventory items)
Cursed King's Belt - equipping this item on a male character will no longer crash the game
Adjusted audio levels – addressed the ‘audio too low’ issue some users encountered
VSync set to OFF by default
DirectInput controller adjustments:
Deadzone for each pad is now stored and configurable via config.ini
DualShock 4 on PC will now have the same deadzone sensitivity as on PS4
Other DirectInput gamepads will also have a much tighter deadzone as well (the same accuracy/sensitivity as on X360 gamepad)
Game logo in Photo Mode – removed artifact on the right edge of the logo watermark.
Refresh rate settings – the game will now properly detect the refresh rate set in config.ini
Key bindings – mapped “0” as the 'center camera' button.
End game credits crashing the game for some users – while this issue could not be reproduced, some changes have been made which should help reduce or eliminate the issue.

Note: the team is still looking into the 5.1/7.1 audio popping/crackling issue that some users have reported. Please stay tuned for a future update.

Woo :D

Now to work up the desire to play a game.

Changed my vocation to strider and yes the combat is much more fun being able to use bow & arrow.

Amazingly I have somehow sunk 16 hours into this game and feel like I have accomplished absolutely nothing.

Pro tip: if you paws are "dead" (skull icon) and you zone out of somewhere (transition), they appear dead in front of you for a quick rez!

Playing a mage around lvl 15-16, game is pretty ok but nothing outstanding yet...considering going 3x bow pawns since you can just quick rez lol

If you have your pawn trained right, they will carry dead pawns to you.

Pawns in this game are awesome. Seriously the best action or rpg companion ai i have encountered.

Don't do that, you very much need the party to be balanced for both magic and physical damage. Unless you find bows that have both types of damage, having 3 archers would hinder you masively against a lot of enemies. You can have whatever party lineup you want and it will work, but only if you get the equipment for it first

Isn't that the best feeling? Being so immersed in the game world! I've beaten the game five times (plus five times on PS3) now and I feel like I'm just getting started! I seriously am in love with this game. If you let it grab you it's just the most charming, expansive, and robust action RPG, like, ever!!

You have to be quick though because if you wait too long they'll just disappear and be dead if you zone out. It depends on the area, too. Bitterblack seems to work better than Gransys in this regard.

If you have your pawn trained right, they will carry dead pawns to you.
It has to be one of the most adorable things I've EVER seen as they carry each other. One carries the other half-way, he then dies, you revive her, then she carries him to you again, as the other dies. IT SO CUTE!

Reminds me of the U2 song One's lyrics: "We get to carry each other, carry each other."

CORRECT. Dragon's Dogma is just the best action RPG, period! So many awesome and innovative features. Pawn AI, pawn quest knowledge, them yelling: IT GETS EXCITED AT THE SIGHT OF WOMEN! (Don't we all, don't we all, HEHE).

Actually no it's not the best feeling. In fact it has completely soured my feelings of the game. I just feel like it takes too damn long to get anywhere in this game. It's just a huge time sink without much ever happening. Cannot believe you played through this garbage 5 times.

I told you you'd love it!!!

...one of the best things about the game is it can be completed very quickly...there's an official Speed Run option where you can beat the game in 1 hour.

Not trying to be mean...but the game gives quite obvious main quests. If you just went wandering around for hours...that isn't the game's fault. Every single main quest is given out of Gran Soren, once you get there...they aren't hiding it.

This ^, just do the main quests.

That post was mostly just a late night rant. I don't really hate the game or think its garbage, it just hasn't hooked me yet and has been kind of underwhelming so far.

i think your best bet at this point is to attempt a bongo drums playthrough of dark souls, as other games seem to bore you :p

That's funny, and farking amazing.

But no, not all other games except Souls bore me. I am actually having a great time with This War of Mine right now. Such a simple game but incredibly deep and thought provoking. Not trying to say its a comparison in any way to DD, but the point is its not like I'm just this jaded gamer that doesn't find anything fun or compelling.

Just finished my first Speedrun. 46 minutes, 51 seconds. I could easily shave 2-3 minutes off that. Speedruns are really fun. It greatly helps you appreciate the flow of the whole game. And it's kind of cool that in a Speedrun it only takes you 5 in-game days to do everything, from becoming Arisen to [redacted]. That's highly efficient questing!
