Family Safety Win 10 and Chrome

Hmmm, so windows 10 on children's pc's, family safety blocking sites, great however it only blocks Edge or IE, anyone else got this working ?

Timeout for PC works just not blocking websites which seems pointless, sure I could uninstall Chrome but ...

I've searched the Internet's and found nothing of use :(

I use family safety, but I don't have chrome installed. I suppose you could block them from using chrome via family safety. Not ideal, but at least that way you can still use it when you're using the machine.

I use family safety as well. For my son's profile I cannot make it so he can only go to websites I list. In Windows 8 this worked great, he could only go to the 6 websites I allowed, but with Windows 10 they got rid of that option and only adult websites are blocked. Apparently the list of allowed sites is only for when you want to give access to an adult site to your kid

On the family safety page they said they made is simplier to use, yeah apparently by getting rid of options

Apparently this is the new trend with Microsoft, "We make things simpler by taking away options", like on Microsoft Edge you cannot choose where you want files to be saved when downloading form the internet.

So I contacted Microsoft about blocking all websites except for the ones I list, and have it working on other web browsers other than IE and Edge.

He said family saftey only works for IE and Edge.
He also said there is no longer any web filtering except for adult websites blocking and what ever sites I put in the block list. Apparently the Always Allow these sites are to unblock adult websites that a parent would want their kids to have. :bleh:

So yeah, seriously, they decided to makes things simpler all they needed to do is get rid of some functionality.

Yeah, it does indeed appear that family safety has been seriously downgraded with Win10. On the Chrome front, however, I'm still getting site notifies so seems to be tracking Chrome websites?

But is it blocking adult websites through Chrome?

Yeah, this isn't good. Nice job, Microsoft.

edit: so, wait a minute. Not only does it not protect within Chrome now, I also can't block Chrome itself?! Where is my itemized app list?

Like I said, they simplified it by getting rid of the useful functionality

What it does is make the entire thing completely useless. I created child accounts specifically to take advantage of the Family Safety functionality and, in one fell swoop, they completely rendered it useless. Worse than useless, actually, since parents think it actually offers a level of protection. Unbelievable.

Okay, I'm mad now.

So I log into one of my kids' accounts (10yr old) and start messing around. Sure enough, Edge has safesearch or equiv running so I can't do something basic like do a google image search for naked girls. Open up Chrome - boom. Naked chicks everywhere. Okay, lets dig a bit deeper.

I install Opera - and it literally installs without prompting me for parent authorization. Still, when I do a naked search, no results same as Edge. Okay, that's weird but good.

Dig a little deeper and uninstall Chrome - it actually does prompt for permission. Have to switch over to my Win login (same computer), since I have some stuffs running. Switch back over to the child account, and attempt to install Chrome. It prompts me for parent approval BUT THEN gives me an option to install without administrative rights. Do so, do the naked girl search and ... there they are.

So, Family Safety is indeed worthless now. Inconsistent in regard to what you can install or not, and inconsistent in regard to what gets safety enforced.

Guess I'm going to have to go third party. Or go back to Win8 (unless they're overhauling Safety there too). Unbelievable indeed.

Yeah, I'm moving over to that as well - already running Norton Security so already in their zone.

Frustrating to invest a lot of time and effort, getting the kids set up with MS accounts and configuring security, just to watch MS flush security down the toilet. Senseless.

Thanks for the info! Please post if MSFT updates this (and you're aware of it since you'll be switching away) for those of us that are taking their time updating to Win10 to see if things like this happen.

Got an update email a few days back, and sounds like MS has made some changes. I haven't had time to look at it.

It was time to renew my Norton Security install, and I upgraded to the Premium version specifically because it offers better Family Safety options than Deluxe.

On a side note, was impressed with Norton support on this one. I'd actually purchased a new Security Deluxe license on Black Friday, and didn't stumble upon a Security Premium deal until last week - at which time I researched the differences and found the better Family Safety options. Contacted support and, rather than deal with refunds etc, they let me merge the two subscriptions into one 2yr Premium sub. Fringe bene is 10 devices, vs 5 with Deluxe. Not bad for ~$50 total.

I have bad memories of Norton. I also stopped using a standalone firewall as it always caused more problems than it was worth for a home user, and am also invested in Bitdefender for antivirus and don't want to switch. Hmmm.

I have Win10 now. My current way to keep my family safe is for them to not use the computer. Except sometimes, and then one of us is around to keep an eye on (and she's really good at only going to her bookmarks).

Yeah, I avoided Norton for years. Last year, however, it apparently slimmed down and was getting rave reviews. Its not flawless, but its been generally solid on most fronts.
