general fps and perfomance problem

I just bought my card for like my livesavings so I hope you can understand why I'm upset.

I got an ATI radeon9800 PRO 256mb

and these specs on my computer

intel Pentium 4
2.4 ghz
512RAM
Win XP
(tis a Dell)
( I got the Catalyst 3.10 drivers as well )

and that's about all I know of my computer.
So it's quite up to date still...
But my fps is really unstable in all games... in Ut2k3 it can range from 75 (what I want) and 28... in Battlefield it's even more unstable at times... I even went under 20 fps in some occasions... now of course this makes me upset since my old card could do this just as well (Gf4 TI4200).

I've asked around like nuts...getting million different advice... nothing has worked. Just the fact that I have to CHANGE stuff and UDJUST things that a normal user would never know of upsets me cause I was expecting this card to make me able to play any game at full uber detail. no matter what.

So what can I do? Is there something I need to do? something I should do?
This is extremely frustrating... ppl with lower cpu and video cards have better fps than me (and more important almost... a more STABLE fps).
Please if you get this to work the way I want it I will be forever greatful.

I did uninstall the old properly before I installed catalyst... and besides...I had the same problems before and after I installed it.

Flakk I would suggest a full reisntall of your Os. Grab the Dell pc drivers at their webbie

Install Xp
install chipset drivers for the mobo
Install directX9b
Install ATI drivers based on ATI release 3.7 to try out.
In the smartguard tab disable fastwritess and set AGP to 4x
run the games

sould give you fine fps mate. Look into the Dells Bios is you can set the agp voltage , if so raise it a bit to 1.6. Fastwritess off in bios and AGP to 4x to.

Let us know what gives

I mean I reinstalled my OS right before I got my card in there... cause I wanted fresh install right? So that's not workin. Got all the new drivers.... did the smartgart thing and all that... the only thing I haven't done is mess with Bios since I don't know how to access them.

hit delete when you turn your pc on during that black screen that counts up your ram. if it goes by too quick, repeatedly hit delete as soon as you turn your pc on.

see if 8x is enabled, and if 128mb is specified.

Hey, I get similar and very erradic FPS problems similar to yours. I havn't been able to find any fix, so the best advice I can give is format.

I'd also note that I didn't have any problems with my gf 2 mx which outperformed my 9700pro on many occasions. (not benchmarks however, where the 9700pro would perform normally/above average)

where do I find those values there? I found some place called "Video configuration" and under that I found two settings. One was called "Graphics aperture size" . It was set to 64. I changed it to 256 which was the highest value... it didn't make any difference. and the other setting was if I wanted to use AGP or PCI. AGP was already set so I left it as it was.

are there many loaded into the taskbar or memory, like Av, office, scanner devices, ... I would suggest to remove them or to disable them at startup, I still prefer the 3.7 drivers they are for me the most stable and almost hassle free ATI's I know.

Are there any sharing/conflicts on your system , have a look at it with Systeminfo of WinXP msinfo32 in the run of the startupbutton. See what gives.
Another thing did you reinstall the games ? or patch them ? I had some issues with Mohaa giving me weird fps and out of center display, when I reinstaled the game no more probs

give us some benchmarks too, like 3dmark2003 or aquamark so whe can see if those are completed ( then the system would be about stable and we can compare your scores)

You have to explain all of that to me...

I have no idea what any of that is >.<.
But I doubt reinstalling the games will do anything... But since I've tried alot already...I guess it wouldn't hurt trying that as well >.<
