Getting PWN'd by 8500dv + Cable Box

Hey all,

I'm running an ATI 8500dv, with a Time Warner Cable box. I just installed the newest recommended driver/software combo (catalyst + mmc) that is on the ATI/AMD website (The TV portion of MMC says 9.14). All that I'm trying to do is to run the cable signal to my 8500dv, so that I can simply watch tv....one would think that this wouldn't be so hard....

I've tried running coax to the video card, as well as composite cables to the dongle. I get 'no signal' with the straight coax connection from the cable box to the coax input on the video card. When I run the composite cables to the dongle, I do get picture and sound output. However, the picture is defaulted to 'live' mode constantly, which makes it skip and stutter. The audio is defaulted to a very low volume level, which is very annoying. I've tried the regedit fix for the live mode functionality, which did not work.

I guess this is really just aggravating because 4 years ago I had the signal coming from a cable box to the same exact setup that I'm using now and everything worked great. The only difference is that I had an older version of the catalyst driver/multimedia center combination. I can't understand why I'm having such a hard time with the 'latest and greatest' drivers, as opposed to the full functionality I had in the past. I've scoured the internet for previous versions of MMC, but can only find old catalyst driver setups.

If anyone can point me in the right direction with this, whether its resolving issues with the current CAT/MMC setup, or past CAT/MMC combos that are more stable and simply work (and download-able), that would be great. Thanks!

Whenever I had a problem like that, and forgive me it's years now since I used MMC, is withing MMC deep inside there are options for input, and it had defaulted to the wrong input. It doesn't naturally seek out which input is live and default to that.

Vaguely from memory this is in the channel setup tap, but I may be off.

how can latest be greatest on older hardware

peak per generation seems to be about 1.5-2.5yrs, unless some new apps/games come out that need a fix

Wow, this is about the most lively i've seen this Multimedia thread in a while. There are actually TWO REG-EDIT "Fixes".... I never could get the one that ATI posted to work...If I remember correctly it stops working after MMC 9.13. But I can verify that the one that Users' found and posted does work; although from time to time (for example if you switch inputs and go back to the Antenna/Cable input - it you'll have to go back in and switch it back off. It can at least give you some temporary useage.

So for suggestions (since you seem to be stuck with MMC 9.14 for the time being you can do a search for the "real" reg edit fix Online. (I can't go digging for it now but if you cant' find it or if someone else doesn't post it, i'll track it down).

Is it correct that you no longer have any ATI installation disks that might have version MMC 9.08 (or before) on them? Catalyst 6.2 or slightly before and MMC 9.06.1 are the recommended versions (although I'm not sure about the 8500....I'm surprised NOT SHOCKED that ATI would post MMC 9.14 for that card.

Well here is a link for 9.06 which is what I went back to.

I've got an x800XT which WinXP SP3 broke it so I had to roll everything back quite a few years. Truth be told they haven't fixed anything in the drivers for any of our cards in years and the newer versions create problems. I went back to the WDM_SP drivers with the old MMC and it works like a frickin champ. Fast channel switching, no digital audio and no TV on demand by default.

Guddha: Don't know if you've got your card up and running yet, but here's what worked for me with my AIW 8500DV. I had cat 5-1 and MMC 7-6 with an upgrade to MMC 7-7. I also tried Cat 6-11 but had some issues.

I know these are old drivers, but let's face it , you're not going to play many games with this 64MB card. Cat 5-1 and MMC 7-7 were very stable.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure where you can get the drivers. I have them archived, but don't do any file sharing. You might try the ATI site and look for the Shop ATI link. If they have the original installaion CD it will coast $12.99 plus S & H.

Good luck

Did you install NSP drivers and edit the SP parts in or how did you get it worlking (since X800XT doesn't have an external audio cable to plug in).
