Google Stadia

Now I know why this latest expansion was so meh. They spent so much time working on Stadia. A lot of people are complaining of lag locally now in the game that didn't exist before. I haven't noticed it, but reddit has a ton of complaints.
I really don't know if that's the case. I think the latest expansion is somewhat meh, but I thought it was supposed to be a bigger DLC than full scale expansion. I know they're talking about "Loot 2.0" and stuff in Destiny, but a lot of the work seemed to be under the hood systems changes to setup future expansions. Things like the Seasonal progression system.

As for Stadia itself, after a few hours of gaming I think I've figured out my likes and dislikes.

Likes (things I either like or am looking forward to):

  • I have a very stable, solid 1Gbps Xfinity connection (new house & outside lines), with everything hardwired over Ethernet, and so the connectivity is pretty solid. Slight hitches here and there, but otherwise very impressed at how well it works.
  • The 4K HDR gaming holds up pretty well. To me, it looks visually better on my TV than my Xbox One X playing Destiny 2 (haven't tried other games). It feels a bit more "PC ish" not Console ish.
  • Destiny 2 has almost no load times. What used to take 2-3 minutes to sit down and get into the game, now takes maybe 15 seconds. This ALONE feels worth the price of admission.

Dislikes (things to fix):
  • There is, even with TV set to "game mode" and such, just the ever present slight bit of lag. I was telling someone last night that it feels like if someone added 40ms to everything you're doing, with occasional hitches jumping up to 200ms for a quick sec. This makes Destiny 2's otherwise very polished gunplay feel slightly more average like other shooters. And it makes me feel like jumping puzzles, of which Destiny has a few, would be a nightmare (I did not test this). But even with this, it feels very playable.
  • I don't like the controller. I like all the button layout and placement. But I mostly use an Xbox Elite (and now an Elite 2) and using this plasticy feeling controller feels like a step back. As gaming controllers go, it's as good as most others, but I don't like it.
  • The game selection is pretty limited. Most of the games available I already own on other systems. So I have little incentive to buy any of these again.
  • I haven't tried it on the PC but from what I gather, it isn't a great PC gaming experience. It uses a browser, and the controller has to be physically plugged in.
  • Also, it won't work with other Chromecasts yet, so I can't use one of the main features of Stadia gaming, the ability to close out, go upstairs, and start playing immediately on another TV.
  • Along with this, there's other features like watching a YouTube video of someone playing and being able to buy the game they're playing and jump right in, none of that works.

The xbx runs destiny 2 at higher settings and a higher resolution, at least according to the verge.

With Destiny 2, it’s even more obvious that the game isn’t running at the highest settings. On a Chromecast Ultra, a “4K” stream looked closer to 1080p, and my colleague Tom Warren and I swore that the 1080p streams we were getting in the Chrome web browser looked more like 720p.

Initially, Google told us that it was using the highest-resolution, highest-fidelity build of Destiny 2 available. But Bungie later confirmed that our eyes weren’t deceiving us. “When streaming at 4K, we render at a native 1080p and then upsample and apply a variety of techniques to increase the overall quality of effect,” a Bungie rep said, adding that D2 runs at the PC equivalent of medium settings. That explains why the Xbox One X build, which runs at a native 4K and with higher-res assets, looks so much better than Stadia.

Verizon went down in Charlotte this week, and the loonies came out crying. I think my favorite was a guy saying, "5G was designed for mind control! Don't be puppets, resist this aggressive push by big companies to take over our minds!"

Wow

I can't believe this thread exists...

A bunch of self proclaimed intelligent nerds thinking they're super advanced by paying for a gaming streaming service where you do not own the hardware or the games because there are none... just a pipe and pay... sounds no different from a crack pipe.

I'll stick to physical consoles and physical releases
.. this stadia is the anti-christ... no hate ok... just it's anti- tech... might as well play FMV games with live actors or tell your brother that the controller is connected and he's winning.

PS... yeah I understand the discussion but this is anti technology, this is for chavs, casuals that don't have hand eye coordination.

Relying on an always on, online service network is just stupidity, sheer stupidity.

I see a rebellion where a faction of gamers will simply hold on to physical videogame systems and game software and CREATE new ROM Cartridges, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and hell even Blu Ray-ROMs with assembler coding optimized to the Hertz peak performance...

It's slowly happening already and retro games are being made and sold and have more soul.

Damn... it sucks that big companies like Microsoft rushed out console generations with their 360... and the thing is we need console generations to have lasted at minimum ten years each... but most of those online enabled games are just useless... no real quality control and required patches are just not cool... just finish coding the damn game before shipping and PCs are different... there's no excuse on single platforms where the hardware is the same.
