GPU fan attacks

If the card is old, which it somewhat is, I might just need a thermal paste refresh...

I did this on all my cards since years, usually after 3 years...

well the readings are wrong, 198C is a garanteed dead card..

It might be the sensor, or it may be sensor/software driver problem or clash.

You could maybe try cleaning out AMD driver and reinstalling or trying a dfferent driver.
What does the catalyst/overdrive thingy say your temp is?
You could also try HwInfo to see what temp it reads.

PS broken temperature sensor won't stop your card working but it might be a good idea to set your fan speed manually to some "safe" speed to keep it cool at full load.

Isn't there a tool to check bios settings? And if you have a 6900 series card, do you have the bios switch? If you do, try flipping it (while the PC is powered down:o ).

Fans running at 100% before windows loads isn't too worrisome in itself since that's the behavior some card display if the controlling software hasn't loaded yet. They default to top speed, just to be safe.

Looks like the thermal sensor is stuck/broken. Obviously the fans are going to run at 100% if it thinks it's that hot.

Does the temp change at all?

Not sure if there is anything you could do to fix it other than getting a new card.

A semi fix would be to force the fan speed to a more reasonable level though Catalyst when you're just doing desktop stuff. Just don't forget to turn it back up before you start gaming so you don't really fry your card.
