Help Finding an Old Game

I don't have much to go on for this one, because I just vaguely remember a demo for a game I played years ago. I don't have much to go on for a search because I'm not even sure if I'm remembering this stuff correctly.

Here are the few things I sort of remember:

- I remember playing the demo for the game back when I got demo discs with old PC games magazines. I remember buying PC Gamer and Computer Gaming World.

- I can't remember then year, but my guess would be somewhere around 1999.

- It was a turn-based combat game. I think the only objective was to defeat all the enemies on the map.

- I remember the demo level being a jungle-style level.

- I think it was a 3D view (probably not first person). But since it was an older game, I think it was a more blocky environment. And I think there were slightly different elevations.

- The character(s) you controlled might have been space marine type characters. In my head I sort of picture it like the Halo characters.

- I think one of the enemies you fought was this red beetle-type monster. And I think it could shoot a flame at you.

- I'm pretty sure the game had hardware accelerated graphics. So it might have been a 3dfx game. I'm thinking the graphics level would have been something like Turok-era (although on a quick look that game was from 1997).

That's it, that's the list. It's such a vague memory, so there isn't much to go on.

Any ideas?

From the description and timeframe, my best guess is Warhammer 40,000 : Chaos Gate. That sounds like a perfect description of the first level.

hmm, beetles that shoot flames, armored units, that sounds like Starship Troopers. Dunno if there was a turn-based game at that time though

Glad you got it figured out. I remember BI Incubation as a pretty good game. I need to replay it and see if it still stands up.

^ I have the retail version of this game and played it for over a month before it got too difficult and I swore off turn based combat as a thing I could enjoy. Completely forgot it existed until this thread.

Leave it to crawdaddy to buy and play and obscure game lol

I suspect it's in that bottom box but in a conference call so probably not a good time to dig it out. Probably not worth the effort in the second place.

Ok I've got one too:

Top-view action game, I think you control a helicopter, and fight tanks and soldiers and stuff. Early 3d-card era (voodoo1, rage fury, etc.). Cool looking terrain with green rolling hills, roads, trees, etc. Amazing graphics for the time. Not an RTS, but I believe there was some light-weight resource management.

I'll just name some off here...

Commanche
Longbow 1 and 2
Thunder Strike
Ahx
