Henry Cavill's days as Superman are over.

The 39-year-old actor revealed via Instagram on Wednesday that he will not be reprising his role as the famed superhero.

He said in his message that he "just had a meeting" with DC Studios' co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

"It's sad news, everyone," Cavill wrote. "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman."

Well, he left the Witcher to focus on being Superman (as stated in October), has a cameo cliff-hangar in a recent movie as Superman, and now announces he won't be Superman anymore....

To be fair to him though, reading his tweet it seems like he wasn't planning on retiring as Superman and that it came as a surprise. Such is the way of Hollywood I guess. Sucks though, he did a fantastic job IMHO.

Cavill isn’t the only one who took some hits recently. Google “DC shakeup” for plenty of hits.

I think it’s a raw deal. He did an excellent job and I can’t honestly think of anyone who could replace him convincingly. He’s perfect for the role.

More time for him to catch up on some PC building and Warhammer until his next gig... Ill bet he's gonna jump into the MCU. Or he could grow a beard and do a Star Wars series.

Who the hell else can play Superman after Cavill has been the guy?!?!?
Someone cheaper. That's basically the goal.

Apparently they ran out of $$ so they can't hire Cavill. Instead they want to do a prequel movie, so they can hire an unknown teenager instead. Sounds like they're hoping to come back and do a Cavill-return later if they someday have the cash.

James Gunn has inherited an awful position at WB. We'll see if they can turn over some low-budget hits for a bit and then get the ship righted again. We'll see.

They had such a good result in Justice League taking off his moustache, they could do equally well to just CGI in a beard :)

Dang this moved quickly.

Henry Cavill is set to produce and star in an entire Warhammer 40K cinematic universe

Amazon Studios has secured rights to the universe "across series, film, and more."

Well, it's official. After rumours began circulating that Henry Cavill was in talks with Amazon to produce and star in a Warhammer 40K series(opens in new tab), we've had an official announcement confirming it's happening. Well, kind of. The reality is much better. It's not just a TV series that's in the works, it looks to be a whole-ass cinematic universe.

The deal was unveiled on Warhammer's community site(opens in new tab), confirming that Amazon Studios has officially secured the rights to create a whole slate of Warhammer 40K goodies, with the agreement encompassing "rights to the universe across series, film, and more." The W40KCU (the Warhammer 40K cinematic universe, of course) will "sit alongside GAW's activities as they continue to make the best miniatures in the world." The announcement also confirmed that, yep, Henry Cavill is set to star and executive produce "across all Amazon Studios productions".
Cavill expressed his excitement for the deal in the announcement. "I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me," he said. "The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honour and the responsibility. I couldn't be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh-on lifelong dream come true."

It's a win for Cavill in the face of him stepping down from his largest roles. Last month saw him announce that season 3 of Netflix's The Witcher series would be his last(opens in new tab), with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role from season 4. Last week, he also hung up his red cape as it was announced that he wouldn't be coming back as Superman(opens in new tab), either. The latter news came mere weeks after saying that he would be returning to the role(opens in new tab), so the whole thing came as a pretty big shock. I'm sure whittling away at Warhammer projects will keep him happy and busy enough for the time being, though.

Sadly there's no hint on what the first Warhammer 40K project will be. Games Workshop announced an Eisenhorn TV show(opens in new tab) back in 2019 under Big Light Productions, but updates have gone silent in the years since. It'd make a great first choice for Amazon Studios to pick up if it was able. With a ton of Warhammer 40K novels(opens in new tab) to choose from too, there's no doubt Cavill will be reaching for his favourites to try and adapt for the silver screen too. Amazon sure knows how to make a damn good series so I'm looking forward to seeing how this collaboration turns out.

Something like this has to be a HUGE dream for Cavill as he's a massive Warhammer 40k fan. You can bet he will put his all into this and be completely passionate about it even if it turns out to be campy.

I'll save you the trouble of seeing the pinnacle of CGI expertise in action.

They want to reboot Superman again. Seriously WTF. They want a young actor to play Superman as a reporter.... who the hell wants to see superman being a reporter ? And going to fight Lex Luthor again ? Skip.. that has been done to death...

That's not why they're doing it. It's about WB's budget problems. Cavill is expensive, and they're looking to do something on the cheap. Plus the fact that they over-spent on the Flash movie and Aquaman 2, and are worried about the next few years. James Gunn's job is to make a few high-performing films on the cheap, and rebuild the studio's finances before they can make big bets again.

Telling a "younger" superman story means they can hire a teenage actor, and pay him $200k.

Well I use the word reboot because all the youtube and websites says it's a reboot example

Well.. the want to do a cheap version ... by doing him as a reporter? WTF. That is like watching spiderman's uncle ben get shot in 20 different movies. I want superman fighting some bad ass aliens or something. Not lex luther as a reporter again...

In terms of scale, I think the goal will be to do something smaller & more intimate, like the first Deadpool. It can be well written, and check a few of the Triple-A boxes, but overall it's going to be much more budget-conscious. That's my prediction anyways.

Am I the only one that didn't have a problem with the last couple Superman movies and Justice League? I don't mean to say they were the most amazing movies I've ever watched, but for super hero movies, which have been done to death at this point, I thought they were pretty good. I certainly enjoyed them more than some of the recycled Marvel movies that came out in the last decade.

Now everything is being thrown out again? I don't get it. Would it not make more sense to maintain continuity with the most recent movies, rather than making the Christopher Reeve movies that ended more than 35 years ago cannon?
