I joined the party

Finally joining the party.... will put my 7950s into action as much as possible but no CPU.... I need that for other tasks.

I have had to down-clock the GPUS so they can run silent but can still pull a reported ppd of 4750 a piece (may change).... I need to work on this machine so 40% fan is my limit.

Will be on during the day most days but not at night and as long as the electricity bill does not end up being absurd I will try to be involved as much as possible :D

Thanks guys :D

I'm a noob at this and I find something slightly strange, I decided to add my cpu but limit it through the advanced options to 50% load.

After an hour, the CPU didn't report any ppd statistics and my gpu ppd stats dropped.

I went from 9500 combined with 2 gpus to 8200 combined with 2 gpus and the cpu at 50%. Disabled the CPU and I'm back at 9500 ppd.

Is this normal or is something strange going on or am I misunderstanding how the reporting works?

on most catalyst drivers, each GPU client needs 100% of one core/thread. to use the CPU client to your advantage, you'll need to leave 2 threads untouched. in the ver 6 client, it was as simple as adding "-smp 6" for 8 core/thread cpus. not sure how to do it in ver 7, as i don't use it.

Ahh gotcha, will see if I can set the CPU to use 2 cores/threads at 50% and leave the rest for the GPUs. I didn't notice that the two cores were loaded due to gpu processing, thanks for the tip.

I need some cpu headroom to do my work.

Thanks :)

Welcome back! :)

Here's a link to configure clients 6&7

Don't forget to get a passkey there's a link in the Advanced Control under Configure >Identity tab.

You'll probably also want to run the new beta core v17 for those gpu's. It's recommended to use the beta drivers 13.2 b 6&7 and 13.3 all work for me..Do a custom install too and uncheck the app sdk you'll ned the older app sdk v2.7 since thats what the cores are compiled for.

Thanks for the tips, just popped my cherry an hour ago.

Got a loooong way to go to catch you guys up :D

Don't worry those beta cores are amazing..my comps now putting out over 80k or a bit more and my daughters comp with my old 6950 is now putting out 20k or thereabouts with the bonuses.

Just give a shout if you need more help..I'm no expert though :)

Both comps fold almost 24/7 and was costing around 25$ a month..may be a bit more now that I've added a second card I'll see soon enough.

Thanks for the offer man, my sig isn't working yet.. suppose it has to catch up.

Going to check out the links you provided :)

i've got a 920 i7 at home and a 860 i7 at work. I run both SMP6 while folding with the GPU as well.

At work this leaves plenty of horse power for everything i run in the background, (outlook, 4 remote desktop sessions, random pcanywhere sessions, firefox with 120+ tabs, mirc, Miranda IM, as400 sessions, various other things). I also play LoL at work while folding and rarely have any issues.

The same holds true at home, there are only a few games where i want the highest fps that i'll shutdown folding. LoL runs great while folding, and most MMO's are fine at least for me. If i play something like Blops or planetside i'll shut it down though.

Just some real world usage examples for ya :)

Sorry for the noob questions...

Which version do I want for the beta client?

I tried clicking start folding on the website and reinstalled in custom mode but there was no option for SDK types (which I have installed)

There are several options to download on the website, which is best for my gpus?

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download2011?from=English.Download

If someone could tell me what to download and what and where the flags are I need to set etc I would really appreciate it :)

Ahh you just need the regular v7.3.6 client. I love the new start page

The AMD App SDK is installed during the Video card drivers from AMD. You need to select a custom Install and uncheck the SDK option there..FAH will most likely barf if 2.8 is installed and you can't just downgrade after to 2.7 then a clean install is required and you need an uninstall utility to get it completely removed. Atiman or drivercleaner or the AMD uninstall utility Win 7 for that even then if on an Intel system cross your fingers.

After installing the new client I don't install the screensaver myself btw.
When you click on the desktop icon it will open a webpage to start the client you can add your passkey then if you have to along with folding name and team. You can adjust the slider to off then close the browser window.

Next right-click on the systray icon select Advanced Control in the slots tab at the top you can right click on each one to pause fold or finish.

Upper left next to the viewer button is the Configure Under Identity you can click the link there to request a password for the bonuses if you don't have one.

Slots tab is where you click on each slot and then click edit for the gpus at the bottom is Extra slot options click add then type client-type for Name and beta for value.
For the cpu highlight edit and at the top is where you set the smp value.
it's best to change when paused then when done click the Exit button on the first page then right-click on the systray and select quit. Then restart the client and the changes should take effect.

i've done it without losing any current work but if you want to be safe you can always have the clients finish first.
G'luck I'm back to work for a few more hours (lunch break).

I sent my reply this morning to the wrong thread LOL, i hadn't had my coffee yet.....

https://fah-web.stanford.edu/project...ki/BetaRelease

This is where the beta's are, the webpage your using has the older v6 stuff. The current release (7.3.6) is actually a final and is whats avail on the beta site as well.

v7 has a very easy to use gui interface and if i recall walks you through init setup. If not the Configure button will have all the settings you need, Username, team number, passkey, and the slots tab is where u can setup folding for the CPU and GPU respectively.

I think Dark is a little more detailed though.

Woo, thanks for the replies guys... it turns out I was adding the beta flag to the advanced panel, I didn't realise that I had to be applied to each gpu in the slot tab.

Got one folding now at 40,000 ppd the other for some reason is stuck at 6000 ppd... not too sure why.

Looking at the project details the slow one states "This project uses the OPENMM_OPENCL FAH core" whilst the other states "This project uses the GPU FAH core software"

Is that why ?

Yer most welcome :)

Not sure my guess would be the other gpu's still folding the old core and should download the new one when it's finished as long as the flags are set... you could always right-click on that gpu and set it to finish once it's done re-apply the setting and restart like above..The client will not download anything for a slot marked finish.

Good point, I think your correct.

For some reason the flag didn't apply to the second gpu and I reapplied it after a restart then restarted it again, looks like it's waiting for the current job to finish.

Seems to be confirmed as the other one finished it's allocated task half an hour ago and the other has some way to go, gpu usage is only at 89% whilst the other is at a constant 99%

I will let it finish then pull down the new core as it's 83% complete.

It's quite nice to be doing something worthwhile with these GPUs... I hardly have any time to game any more and underclocked at 900/1200 at 0.9volts a piece I can have the fan set very low and still work on the machine.

One last question though.... Is there anyway to limit the GPU usage to say 90% a piece?

I ask this as when working I can feel that redraws to the screen are a little sluggish when working with multiple documents and browsing the web.

To be honest I haven't tried . Have you tried lowering the slider? It can be done either through web control or the advanced control. Or you could right click on the first gpu and pause it if it gets to be too much.

For some reason, if I move the slider to anything less than full both GPUs get stuck on 'waiting for idle'

To be honest, for the most part I can live with it, like you mentioned I may just have to pause one of them for a while every now and then.

Also both cards are now working with the new core, estimated 65k ppd even when down-clocked quite significantly or 75k when overclocked :D
