Need a new car, don't really care for cars

I like the look.... I feel like I have my heart set on the corolla for some reason. I should be more flexible.

As far as I know the new ones have CVT trans. Nissan had issues with their CVT transmissions and they were suspect industry wide for a while. Now, I think that the 2016 and later corolla with the CVT has enough years and miles to be reliable, as far as that goes.

I did think about focusing on finding a corolla with the 4 speed auto....

Its only the Nissan CVT's that were trash (and early Minis).

The Toyota CVTs are fine. They're made in-house more or less by their Aisin transmission company. Nissan sources theirs from a company called Jatco. Toyota has been using CVT's in the Prius forever and as far as i know they haven't had any real issues.

My main problem with CVT's is that they completely suck any semblence of entertainment out of the car.
In terms of entertainment value on a scale of 1-10, a manual would be a 8-10, an auto trans somewhere between 5-7 (conventional or dual clutch) and CVT's are 0.

I think Toyota offered 4 speeds for awhile on the 2014-2016 (dont remember the year range) era corollas, but only with the really base cars that were destined for rental fleets.

I wouldn't be afraid of the CVT, Toyota makes good ones and you're not looking for a fun car anyways, so CVT would be ideal for you.

I did see a few 2014s and 2016 with 4 speeds.

So, I'm pretty set on either the corolla or mazda 3.

Now I have to contend with current used car prices. This is making me think very dark thoughts about car dealerships, sales people, the selfishness of other human beings and how shitty everything is. Now I remember why I held onto my old car for so long....

I didn't mind the CVT on the Corolla rental car I drove and it seems fine. I'm just wary of Nissan CVTs, as the market is full of Nissan versas with questionable transmissions.

Mazda is very reliable, good warranty and way more fun to drive than a Corolla, IMHO.

same here, but to be honest, the Corollas are almost indestructible, you have to give em that. Personally, i'd get a Mazda, but that's because of my taste, not that they are superior on the tech side.

They can be indestructible. Always worth checking reviews and long term reports for a given model year or series. Even Corolla's have model years/series you want to avoid.

I've been checking on car complaints.com. Nothing bad or good regarding the 2017-2018 corolla's yet. 2016 is rated as good.

I reluctantly put the Honda Civic on the list. Why not? If there is a deal I'll take it.

Considering the Hyundai Elantra... Need to check the years tho.

this is my thinking. ours gets a little lurchy sometimes when pulling off from a dead stop. thats really the only thing. overtaking at highway speeds is very adequate.

Honda fit might be worth checking out. I used to have a 2015 model. Its a small car like the yaris but the packaging is wizardry. Its best attributes were the interior space and the gas mileage. I think its probably one of the absolute best subcompact cars out there.

My brother has one. An older model but he's got one.

On one hand, I'd feel lame as **** for getting the same car he has.

On the other hand, that little thing is a proven ****ing trooper with how its handled him (a not small dude) wife, and two toddlers/babies.

So I finally narrowed it down

2017 Corolla LE- Single Owner, 22k miles, 13500.
2017 Corolla iM- Two owners, 45k miles, 13300.

Heart says iM, head says LE. Gonna test drive the iM.

The major differences between the two will be:
-Sedan vs hatch. Theres more rear leg space in the sedan, but the hatch obviously has more cargo space.

-Engines. Not a huge difference in power between the two (137hp vs 132 in favor of the iM) but the iM motor has what is called "Valvematic" which i think makes it a little bit more rev happy and it gets a little better gas mileage. (If the Corolla LE happens to be the ECO model then the motors are the same and this comparison is moot.)

-Fun to drive factor. Im sure the cars drive mostly the same (the corolla is always a reliable, relaxing, easy to drive car), but the handling characteristics of the im will be sharper (i believe its tuned more euro friendly and it has an independant rear suspension vs a torsion beam which helps handling) The steering is light but its surprisingly direct.

IF everything between the two cars are pretty much the same for you, it'll probbaly come down to one or all of those 3 major differences between the cars.

Being a hatch is one major reason i myself have an iM over a corolla

The extra room of the hatch speaks to me. Not comparable, but long in the past I had a 95 sable wagon and I could haul. The things that fit in that junkheap....

The big issue for me is that I'm eating 23k miles of wear for my black hatchback. : / I worry that that will bite me in the ass.

Carfax for both cars looks really good with detailed maintenance done. Batteries replaced, brakes serviced, this done, that done, regular oil changes....

Always take low mileage. Also Corolla hatch looks like ass.
Also two owners for such low mileage might be because the car is a lemon. No one sells a Corolla.

The white one is a one owner car, so I'm leaning there. I'm gonna be looking at both.

Best of all is that the base corolla is a dime a dozen, so none of these are the be all to end all.

For some balance to this sub, I'll update.

I got the White Corolla with lower mileage. Boring AF, I know. But it does the job fine.

Amazing how many creeks and sounds my old car makes whenever I ride it these days... Never noticed it before lol. Brother still hasn't taken ownership of it.
