Nioh 2 PS4 13 March 2020

Just for comparison sake, I have a build in Nioh that's in Way of the Wise or NG+++. Level 420.

The difficulty in the Nioh2 last chance trial was comparable to that in a couple of spots, but for different reasons.

Even on my level 80 NG build, with 2-3 enemies at once I was able to maintain my stamina and either win or retreat. Taking a straight hit from one of the more dangerous enemies (raven tengu) didn't even tank my ki.

A minor hit from say...the medusa or ninja yokai on the other hand in 2 would wreck me.

It's almost as if the devs are going for a ki based combat system, somewhat like Sekiro's poise based system. Only in Sekiro you could take multiple hits.

Not so much in this.

Welp, I've already pre-ordered the game, so here's to hoping that really was a mid game level being attempted with a new build.

Yeah, got to the boss and kinda stopped. So... much... aoe spam. Maybe trying with a different Yokai burst would have been better, but holy smokes, the timing differences between the three just make it having to relearn counters all over again.

ANYWAYS, I hate myself and am bad with money so I preordered it in the hopes that ****'ll be a bit more level in the normal game considering how much time I put into the OG game. Here's hoping!

If it's too bad, at least I'll have Animal Crossing later in the month to wind down with.

For anyone interested, fightincowboy put together an excellent guide on Nioh 2's build attributes/configuration how to etc. About a 30 minute watch, no spoilers and worth it if you're new to Nioh. Combat and tweaking goes much, much deeper than Soulsborne games, so it's worth learning it.

A lot of this also applies to the first game....

Ugh yeah, I gotta figure out what weapon sets I'm gonna use this time around. Might do tonfa/spear. Did tonfa/dual swords last time around with Onmyo, but it looks like they changed up some stats, mainly adding that Courage one which kinda dampers that old synergy. Though I might go completely crazy and try to get a ninjitsu build going this time around.

Argh, why can't it be the 13th? Might just start a new character on Nioh 1 and play that for a bit. Would try doing the DLC again but they pretty much balanced that around going through Way of the Strong first it seems, but grinding way of the strong to do normal dlc kinda burned me out last time.

Been playing Nioh to get ready and practice before 2 comes out. So far I'm enjoying the Odachi move set and play style.

I've never rolled an onmyo build, but that switch glaive/spear combo looks nice.

I didn't get the same feel for basic stats that I had with the first though. My WotW build in 1 has been a Kusa/ninjitsu build from the very start, but even at rock bottom it wasn't as squishy as the build in 2 felt, even at ~lvl 30.

We'll have to see if the tempering has been nerfed as well. That was a pretty powerful forging tool in 1, and reforging is gone in 2 so....

I'll have to find out along with everyone else...I've been working steadily through WotW and the abyss for a couple of weeks now - WotW hurts :p

That dlc...I didn't think the balance was there. I solo'ed everything, but 2 of the bosses were just ridiculously painful.

Just for comparison - I've gone into way of the strong dlc co-op to help someone, after clearing it solo on way of the demon, and still had a tough time

Onmyo was fun as you always had a supply of magic shots to hit stuff from far. Also buffing weapons with elements. I managed to snag some dual katanas that had A scaling in Magic as well at some point. Part of me wants to keep Onmyo this time as well, cause, yeah, elemental buffing weapons is handy.

Yeah, the DLC crushed me. The first boss would one shot me. It was kinda insane.

Welp, couldn't help myself and started a new character in Nioh 1 to pass the time. Went dual swords/spear. Build is kinda all over the place, not dumping into any one stat. Works for now though! Managed to get Hino Enma in under 10 tries I think? And that's without cheesing sloth like I did the first time around. Still popped living weapon when she was down to less than 25% health just to make sure I finished her. I will say, immediately getting your guardian spirit back when you enter a boss fight is a nice QoL upgrade in Nioh 2. Dodging bosses to get it back to your "grave" can get hectic. Though I will say, it's nice how fast the LW guage fills opposed to the Yokai shift gauge in Nioh 2. Will miss that, unless main game tweaks things even more from that last demo.

Playing now there is a distinct lack of high level revanents dropping those special armor sets like my first go around.

The high level revenants are in the dlc after that 1st boss

There's a mission in the Dragon of the North dlc in the Tohoku Region called Spirit Stone Huntress.

At first glance it just looks like a single boss room when you warp in, but if you turn around and go back, there are usually 20-30 graves where you originally fight Date Masamune. Farm away for gear, glory and cups. Way of the Strong is even better.

I know the community is super active still - anywhere from 5-25 seconds I'm summoned into someone's game.

I'm going for that onmyo build, until 2 drops anyway, and yeah that auto retrieve on the GS is super sweet.

Man I can't wait for that game.

lol, was one mission away from the Revanants I was thinking about. Got to the mission where the starting town is on fire and you have the flaming yokai wheels to take out. Bunch of Revenants decked out in Warrior of the West sets and what not. Feels kinda cheap.

You know, the warrior of the west set not being available any more just might be one of the best things about Nioh 2

Solid stats for NG, but geez man, I hate it lol.

Man it'll be good getting in on the ground floor for revenants. Always fun to see what people roll with. Just did a mission and it was just a sea of Warrior of the West. You ****ers give me something different! lol At least get an upgraded sword so I can upgrade mine. First area cleared in a new playthrough. Skipping the duel for the dual lightning puppies for now. I'll never not say **** that guy. The heat seeking Iai bastard.

So close, but so far away. Just unlock the game already and surprise us all. :bleh:

I just crafted a full fanatics set, running with Suzaku and just wrecked Sekigahara and the Source of Evil - I love that level for the revenants and the amrita farming.

I can't wait to see what areas they set up in 2 - 3 more days and I have the day off lol.

edit: I just did one of the side missions too - squirming sprite I think? Loaded with Tengu, so there were graves everywhere lol. Yep, ALL warrior the west

It's funny you guys mention this Warrior of the West gear set because that's all I've got at this point. But I'm only a little level 30 lowbie. So maybe it doesn't matter. I'm just glad to have a set of something that matches.

Yesterday I found a mission that took me to a graveyard where undead just kept spawning. I'm guessing this is like a horde mode encounter where I just have to keep at it and survive until the end? After a few tries at that I went somewhere else, found a nice little encounter with an open field and a dude who just wrecked me by himself. I feel like I mostly have him figured out, I just can't seem to execute without ****ing something up at some point.

Now I'm just tooling around in a silver mine. Still really liking the game so far. And my sword has lightning on it so that's cool.

The warrior of the west set is actually a really good set stat wise. Team Ninja just gave a lot of options for dedicated builds and it's kind of a running joke that so many people use it that it's hard to find other sets. If you go to your menu and choose a piece of armor, then hit....l2 I think?? it flips the screen and tells you all the buffs you can get with that set.

I can't for the life of me think of a graveyard with undead spawning though....do you mean the graves spawning player NPCs? If so you're probably in Kanbei and the Overlord - there's a certain yokai that spawns enemy players until you kill it....you'll hear it before you see it :)

Okay, that makes sense because it's all I seem to get off Revenants. I think I understand what you're talking about now. Last time I played (I keep saying last night but it might've been Sunday), there was a 44 ish revenant that I brought down who dropped 3 pieces of purple gear, all Warrior of the West stuff. I really wish this game had set bonuses on this gear, I'd be set. I love the way the Shinobi gear looks. Does the blacksmith option to make a piece of gear look like another piece of gear destroy the appearance gear you use?

Uh, I took a boat across to another area, and it's one of two places that unlocked. Something with Graveyard in the name I think? It's in the top right. You spawn in and the little ankle biter zombies start spawning, then the Yokai, then they just keep getting bigger and there are more of them.

Yep, some gear has massive set bonuses. That's the hitting L2 I mentioned. It flips the screen and tells you what you will get for bonuses (if that set has bonuses) and what stats you need to get all of them.

And yes, look up 'refashion' at the blacksmith. You keep the armor and all it's perks, but get the look you want :)

I'm having a senior moment

I'll have to check when I get home because I am drawing a complete blank. You've got me wondering if there's a challenge I completely missed.

edit: Are you talking about Guardian of the Underworld? You're in a small area by the ocean, minor yokai warp in, then bigger and bigger?

Yeah, Warrior of the West is good. It's just... all I see and I'm trying to avoid it in this run. lol, eventually you'll start seeing, I think, the Red Demon set start popping up on revenants. At this point, set wise, I think you should be able to craft the Raging Bull set (Heavy) or the Tacticians set (Light). Right now I'm running a mix of med/light to stay in the blue for my weight. Though I do have pieces of the Warrior of the West set earmarked as a backup.

Yeah, you seem to be where I am in my new run shrike. I just finished the silver mine last night.

Yeah, pretty sure it's the Guardian of the Underworld quest. Has the mage lady on the quest page. Starts out low and ramps up, it's an endurance fight. When you first get to the second area it's either that quest or the silver mine.

Here's a solid list of armor set bonuses.

I'm back at the final mission before the dlc - it's been a refreshing NG run. Using weapons I avoided before like dual swords and Katanas + a healthy dose of magic.

I won't beat the dlc before the new game drops because screw you dlc balancing and kick my ass....but I'll have some done.

Oh Shrike - if you haven't picked up on it yet, you can go back to any mission you've completed and play it all over again, boss fight and all just like it's the first time.

Great for amrita farming.
