Official nVidia 3d, IZ3D or other solution Stereo Thread

Just a small nugget of nVidia information with Stereo 3d and FarCry -- touches on newer drivers:

The good news is NVIDIA tells me FarCry 2 looks very good with their upcoming drivers, and we will update their review portion as soon as they are available.

More concerned with how FarCry looks with the new glasses and monitor. Glad to see there are avenues a gamer may take to have stereo3d now but will see if nVidia's new offering hopefully soon will be worth the hype ( considering it is included in the GeForce Plus PR program)

I was hoping around November, December time-line. There hasn't been much to find as of late to add to this thread but will continue to try to find things. Like to see or find something about the monitors.

There is nice information in those reads:

For the time being the market has yet to provide the LCD on sale 120Hz, 120Hz will be the first to support the Viewsonic product is expected to come in January 2009 listing, Samsung will next year launch of the first quarter of 120Hz.

Touched on offering 3d for pictures and video and games DirectX 7 above for the most part.

I read reviews about the IZ3D monitor. It works a little differently than what Nvidia intends to release. IZ3D basically puts two LCD panels in one monitor. It makes for great 3D, but poor text / 2D readibility compared to regular LCD's.

Polarization lenses = crap. They darken the image you are viewing by about 50%, and if you crank the brightness to compensate for it, you end up with ghosting artifacts since polarisation will never achieve a 100% discrete image.

High frequency alternate image is better, but requires more technology to get it right since any failure in sync between the screen and the LCD glasses will result in complete chaos. Polarization is "cheaper" in that regard.

Nvidia’s 3D stereo delayed to Q1 2009

Nvidia’s 3D stereo delayed to Q1 2009

Fudzilla
Nvidia's 3D stereo has been pushed from original Q4 2008 to Q1 2009. The reason is quite simple, the display industry is not fast enough to bring 120Hz displays to the market; and this is the crucial point of 3D stereo technology.

You need at least 60Hz per eye to feel comfortable and currently there are just a few monitors that can do this, but they are based on old technology and cost quite a lot of money. The next generation 120Hz monitors should be only a tad more expensive than the current 60Hz, at least this is what Nvidia told us back in August. At that same time, we had a chance to see the new 3D stereo glasses and drivers, but the production and availability to retail have been pushed to Q1 2009, hopefully January time.

3D stereo does look great, but it might suffer from the fact that it looks much better when you look at static and slow scenes and in fast games such as FPS games you might lose some of the 3D feeling when you run. We still think that this is the way to go, and most importantly you don’t get a headache from the glasses, something that was the case 5 years ago when Nvidia introduced 3D stereoscopic gaming glasses.

The other issue is that we still don’t know the price of the glasses, but bear in mind that you need to buy a new monitor to make this work.

One of the things I've tried to do is try to find quotes from people that have witnessed game-play with the glasses:

And after sitting down and playing Left 4 Dead (remember, that’s not a TWIMTBP title) using Nvidia’s upcoming 3D glasses, the experience is a real game-changer. That’s a topic for another day (soon), though.

Have not read one first hand view so far that said it sucked yet - or there was ghosting or blur, etc.. Usually Awesome and amazing..............or something to this reviewers view.......... a real game-changer.

I don't know what he means by soon but I guess will find out soon enough, hehe!:) Still imagining a horde of 3d stereo zombies in that title.........must be a hoot considering the way they move and one with the tongue that grabs people.............imagine that coming out of the screen, hehe!:)

This is some info on the Fudzilla link Caveman kindly offered:

I spoke with Viewsonic yesterday and today, and this is the first they have heard of this. They have reached out to their NVIDIA contacts to see, but as NVIDIA hasn't come forward to MTBS, end of 2008 is super close anyway, and Viewsonic is planning on demoing at CES as planned (we were invited for a demo)...I think this is a non-news story and I see no cause to go crazy over it. I mean, how could they not delay to Q1 2009?!?

Here was another first hand view in the link that madyasiwi kindly offered above. I tend to look for these more than anything else right now. This means nothing unless they deliver a compelling gaming experience.

in case of Age of Empires III, I want to play the game again, as soon as I am able to lay my hands on these glasses.

The reason why 3d stereo never did take off was compatible and quality aspects to me. If these things are solved --- really believe gamers will take notice. Not at the start for many, but as the technology matures and industry moves more-so in this direction, and as prices drop and gamers hear more positive views........they may try it and like it.

It's great to see a company try to create a market here.

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but doesn't this also require a framerate of 120hz/120fps/60fps-per-eye? Or can it run at 120Hz/60fps/30fps-per-eye where each eye sees the same image twice in a row?

I think its the former. This is going to be a hard sell, as its really expensive to get into. 120hz display, stereo goggles, highend sli... all signs pointing towards niche market for the gamer who has everything.

If the industry wasn't moving to "3d ready" displays would agree. It may be niche for early adopters but as time passes this may be important and grow.

This technology isn't about launch but years moving forward to me.

For this to grow:

1) Monitors evolve and improve and if many more monitors offer "3d ready" with pricing affordable. You have to remember movies and the entertainment sector is really looking at 3d now -- not just games.

2) Compatibility -- if titles don't work -- what's the point?

3) Quality -- if gamers don't receive a "WOW" factor and impressed by it -- what's the point?

4) Flexibility -- if gamers can't enjoy levels of 3d with single to Sli --- what's the point?

5) Pricing -- history teaches us pricing changes over time and for many reasons. Can see higher prices for early adopters but as time passes very affordable for many.

If done right -- this product may change the way gamers look at gaming. We talk 3d -- think we're seeing in 3d but in 2d. This is true 3d.

If it is a gimmick -- will fail. If it is quality -- may slowly succeed and help redefine gaming. There is only one way to find out -- by offering it and oh, so welcomed. Open minded and desire this to succeed and rock. This market didn't succeed in many cases in the past because there wasn't enough compatible and quality aspects and too expensive to boot.
