Official NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series & H100 Thread

Seems like the only real "value" this generation is to get a 4090 and be done with it, despite its high price it should be a GPU that lasts a long time like the 8800GTX did.

I was thinking about it and after selling the 3090, it will end up being an actual cost to upgrade of about $1000. If SLI was still a thing for gaming, I would have considered buying a 2nd to SLI and had worse performance and reliability with greater power requirements. So IMO the 4090 was an amazement deal.

Now I just need to actually use it. I don’t think I played anything but Genshin Impact on the 3090 and I usually just play that on my phone with a Kishi.

Everyone buying it will upgrade again in two years, so it won't last any longer than normal.

Probably right. IF I bought one i'd be one to go 4-6 years probably, but I'm having a hard time getting myself to spend that sort of money on something that isn't an actual need and barely a want... there's no huge new technology that is here... just faster at what it does. The only thing new is a crutch to make things seem to go faster yet. While my 2070 is getting long in the tooth, I expected to be able to replace it for x70 pricing by this point, not mining prcing+. That isn't to say that at some point I might not pull the trigger on a 4080 or 4090, but as I'm content with what I have now, might just wait for the 5070/5080 when they introduce a feature I can't live without.

Or you could save yourself $1000 and spend it on something that you'd get use out of. :)

There are features that are quite useful. RTX, DLSS3 and frame gen are actual game changers. It is not just fast, it is being able to enjoy that smoothness at 4K which is a unique selling point.
I don't know why everyone loves to diss RTX effects but once you have played a game with those on, turning it off is not an option. That was true for me for Control, Dying Light 2, Guardians of Galaxy and most recently Witcher 3 (and to some extent Gotham Knights but the implementation is not the best).

From all the testing I’ve done so far, DLSS3 isn’t needed to max out games at 4K.
I haven’t tried it yet but reviews aren’t painting a pretty picture quality wise and the whole reason I spent all that money on a G-Sync ultimate monitor is to enjoy the best possible image quality.

depends on what you call playable. For me if I can use DLSS3 to keep frames above 144 in 4K or 240 in 1440P, it is worth it to me. I have tried it in Plague Tale and maybe Cyberpunk if I remember correctly. Also in NFS and it is worth it for me.

I haven’t seen it yet first hand. I was going to try it just to see in Cyberpunk but couldn’t find the option. I’m personally happy with 60+ fps and G-Sync though. I can notice a difference in direct comparison but once I start playing it won’t impact my enjoyment any.

I love and use RTX (and was the compelling reason to buy my current card) which also has DLSS2 and good enough for my tastes. I'm not currently doing 4k, so DLSS3 shenanigans don't really seem necessary... but then again, I'm one of those peons plenty happy at 60 FPS. I splurged on a GSync monitor to avoid visual tearing which was a turnoff.

When the next RTX comes out, and it will eventually, then I'll probably upgrade even if I don't need it for performance reasons. I'd be really pissed if I bought a 4090 expecting that to tide me over for 4-5 years and the following generation introduces a new feature I don't have but want. I was fully expecting some sort of visual kick in this gen, not just more speed so a bit disappointed.

I expect the next time I upgrade will be a full system upgrade when a new video feature happens, but maybe another year will come and go and I'll do it wanyway. New GPU, new motherboard/CPU, new 4k HDR monitor. Bumping up a GPU on my last-gen ryzen to drive a 1440p monitor seems somewhat pointless.

It's time to see it first hand. I only played DLSS3 with Plague Tale but it made the game so much smoother with everything maxed out on my 4090 at 4k 120hz. That is WITH Gsync enabled, which DLSS3 now works with from the latest update. It is more smoother than with GSYNC enabled alone at 4k.

To have DLSS3 work with Gsync you have to do these short steps (from Nvidia's website):

Enable G-SYNC: NVIDIA Control Panel --> Display --> Setup G-SYNC
Turn VSYNC On: NVIDIA Control Panel --> 3D Settings --> Manage 3D Settings
Use the Global Settings tab to apply the options in every game, or on a per-game basis in the Program Settings tab
Turn on DLSS Frame Generation in a supported game

Everyone buying it will enjoy games NOW at the higher settings/framerates since the second place card (4080 or 7900XTX) is so far behind in performance. 2 years is only two generations so in 2 years you may get 4090 performance at mainstream prices, and the 4090 owner has the option to stick with it further since it's still a powerful card or move on to the next latest and greatest. Whereas you spend money now on a garbage overpriced mainstream card only to wish you had something more powerful 6 months down the road when the latest games starting taxing your hardware quicker than a 4090.

That's the advantage of going to the top from the getgo and riding it out a couple generations and then hop on to the next mountain card.

Word up. I am not wasting my time. I rarely play games and when I want to I want the best. Fuck everything else since I can afford it lol. Plus net cost to get the 4090 for me was zero. As I had a 3090 Ti and 3080 Ti to sell which funded the 4090 and some cash in my pocket. :p

What PSU are all you 4090 owners using? I only have a 1000w atm and I have to lower the power slider to OC. Although, it’s only port Royal that has any issues if I don’t,

I have a 1300w G2 EVGA from good old days. But I ran my card on a 1050w Gamemax PSU with 600 watts power limit without issues?

Most likely if you are having issues then you maybe running a Corsair PSU. Those pieces of crap usually crap out with any type of heavy load.

Get a Silverstone or ASUS ROG 1200w PSU and call it a day.

It’s a 1000W EVGA G2. I may hold off on doing anything though given that some are having driver issues and I can loop the last light bench W/O issue. Metro in the past had always been the first detector for instability.

right now, it’s at +80, +512 with the power slider at 96. No issues at +106/512 Power slider 96 but I generally back it off a hair.
