Red Light on Remote Receiver?

Is the red light on the Remote receiver for the Remote Wonder II always supposed to be lit even if you haven't loaded the remote wonder software? I have the "safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray instead of the remote control icon and no red light on the remote receiver. I have tried everything I could find here on the forum and like others with the "safely remove hardware" icon, nothing has worked to get the remote to work.

I am beginning to suspect a hardware problem but not sure if the light is only supposed to be on if all the drivers are loaded and everything is working okay or if it is always on no matter what.

workaround....

workaround....

I had the same problem that you are having and I would call it a hardware problem (but I'm not totally sure).

Here's my workaround:

If you've installed the drivers first before plugging in the receiver, then this is how I get mine to work.

With the computer on, unplug and replug-in the receiver. If the red light on the front of the receiver comes on, then Log Off. DON'T RESTART!! Log back on to your user account and the RW icon should show up in the system tray.

This not the best workaround if you leave your computer off most of the time. I use my remote on my HTPC, which is left on most of the time and my receiver is plugged into a self-powered USB hub that I can get to easily if the light doesn't come on during a start-up/restart of the computer.

Sometimes the light will come on during a fresh boot-up or restart, but in my experience, if you leave your computer off for a period of time it will not come on at boot-up.

I'm not sure what the problem is. This is only a problem with my RWII. My RWI works perfectly on my main desktop, so I am assuming it is a hardware problem. Also I suspect since they are shipping the Remote Wonder Plus! (I think that's the name) with the newer products, that ATI is taking the we-can't-fix-this-without-a-recall-so-let's-ignore-it-and-hope-it-goes-away attitude.

We'll see...

P.S. I have sent a Trouble Shooting report --- or whatever it's called to ATI... TWICE!! I have yet to receive a response either personally or with a public acknowledgement of the problem.

Thanks for the reply. I contacted ATI tech support and they said it sounded like a hardware problem and issued an RMA for me to return the USB receiver. I thought perhaps the red LED is like a power indicator showing that the receiver is working but wasn't sure. When I first plugged the receiver in after installing the remote control software, my computer said it was installing the software for the USB receiver but the light never came on and the Remote Control icon never appeared either. I don't want to waste money and time shipping it back if it isn't bad. Like others, it worked fine until I reformatted and reinstalled windows XP. Now I don't know if I should send it back for repair.

the red light on the reciever is ALWAYS on on mine, and has NEVER been a problem for me. Unless I'm mistaken, its supposed to work that way

Thanks WiKiD. That's what I was looking ofr. I am going to go ahead and RMA it.

I RMA'ed the remote control and receiver and was sent a brand new replacement of both. Plugged the receiver in and now the remote works fine so it was a hardware problem.

I've observed that as well. Unfortunately, his past weekend I had my second receiver die, rendering the remote useless. This is twice in less than 18 months, each unit lasting about 6-7 months.

This is more than a hardware problem, it is a quality problem. All my other USB devices work fine, and have done so since day one of the machine.

Kind of like the FM radio not working in the X800 XT AIW. Another problem ATI refuses to do anything about. Next time I am in the market for a video card, it won't be ATI.
