Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury overheating issues

Jumped on the end of October deal, and the journey has been anything but smooth sailing. RMA'd the first card, because video output went bye bye. Replacement card was better, but still has random issues waking up from sleep mode and, like the first, crashes regularly during games (full system hang).

The way the gaming crashes occur, I started looking at overheating being a probable factor. Sure enough, after installing Speedfan and ramping the fans up to 50% (haven't fine tuned the required target fan speed), in game crashes have ceased.

This seems like a poor workaround, having to use 3rd party software to maintain stability. Why isn't the card managing temps / fan speed properly?

RMA the card again. No way you should be putting up with that bullshit or having to manually set fan speeds on a card running stock OOTB settings.

What are the temps hitting? What are the fan speeds hitting?

I had to manually set fan speeds on my 5970 and eventually died because of heat. Hope your next replacement works out for you! Good Luck Lup.

Did you use msi afterburner with custom curve fan? Make sure it's on "AUTO". Cause if it's disabled when you start it up. That happened to me once. The temp went skyrocket during gaming. I had to exit the game immediately and then return on the "auto" fan. But I don't use MSI AB anymore. I now use sapphire Trixx because it didn't give me any issues. So watch out with MSI AB! It's POS....trust me.

No, just using Speedfan. Right now I'm using it manually, but it has an auto feature too. I don't mind using tools, but not if its to work around an issue that shouldn't exist. If the card is faulty, this is the time to address it.

Honestly, feeling like asking for a credit and going with something completely different at this point. Two cards, two issues. At what point do you call it and move on?

Sounds reasonable to me.

id be pissed.

look into getting credit, prices may fallen on better hardware so at least u can get a minor upgrade for your hassles

i can give u a smoking deal on some 290s, and you know my hardware works! (assuming that mobo u bought still works lol)

Sounds like you've been unlucky. I've got a vanilla Sapphire Fury which I've had for about 16 months and I've had no issues whatsoever. Like Treecold I use Sapphire Trixx and it's a great piece of software. You can download it from the website. I presume the Nitro has the same cooling solution my card has so you could try lowering the power to -10 and the max temp at 75c in Trixx and see how that fares. Possibly worth trying before you RMA it again.

Contacted Newegg, and its outside of the 30 day return window. They'll work with me, if I don't have luck with Sapphire. But that probably puts the kibosh on the refund / buy something different idea.

Put in a trouble ticket with Sapphire. I expect they'll stand behind it ... just not excited about getting another of the same card again. I'm sure its probably fine, but fool me twice and all that.

You sure the secondary power connector is working? The GPU might be trying to pull fan power from the secondary connector.

Lup - That's really ashame.

Mine is working great. However, I did have to take metal shears to my case to get it to fit :D I have one of the intake fans at the front of the case blowing air directly to the R9 Fury (being that I hacked out a portion of a hard drive bay in my Antec 300. Haven't had any issues thus far.

My thoughts mirror metroidfox's about the power supply. I may be way off base, but maybe your PSU is under-powered and this strain on the card attempting to suck as much power as possible is causing the over heating?

He has a 750w PSU with a single 62A 12v rail. No way the PSU is the problem, unless it's defective -- but I doubt it. He didn't have any issues with the card he had before the Fury either, if I'm not mistaken.

Checking cables is a good idea, but I think it's 95% chance it's just poor luck with defective cards. :(

I'll check the PSU connectors. It would surprise me to find that the PSU, a Seasonic 750W, underpowered. It is 4yrs old now, though. My understanding is that the dual 270s had a higher combined draw than the single R9, but maybe I'm wrong w/ that assessment. As far as the connectors, the 270s each used one of those plugs w/o issue for over a year.

Have you tried Afterburner?
Have you set a custom curve in AfterBurner?
If so, does the card follow the curve?

Before wasting a lot of time RMA'ing I'd second just using Afterburner to set a more aggressive fan curve. Also you can try reducing the voltage a little bit to reduce temperatures. Apparently a lot of RX480s can run fine with lower voltage.

Yes, ideally you'd get a card that works 100% out of the box, but now you have this one I think you're better off just seeing if you can fix it, rather than going to the trouble of RMA'ing. If you get it working you can still keep an eye on the warranty window and maybe send it in for replacement right before it expires.
