Searching and not finding the application or control

Attempting Windows 10 again. So far, I haven't had any of the glitches I did before which is great.

Although what I'm experiencing is quite annoying.

For example.

-Windows 7 behavior- Click start, type UAC, hit enter. Brings up the User Account Control panel to adjust alert setting.

-Windows 10 behavior- Click start, type UAC, hit enter. Brings up a search window with zero results.

What in the hell is going on here? I've tried fixes for indexing, but I don't think this is exactly an indexing issue. Any ideas?

Classic shell

Windows 10 sucks for searching things like that with there crappy new start menu.

I've installed 10 on 4 rigs and none of them allowed me to search for apps and control panel items like it used to be in Windows 7.

So this is perfectly normal behavior for 10?

I could have sworn that the first time I tried 10 it allowed me to do such things, but the overall behavior was so wonky. Add to that the activation issues I encountered during an attempt at a clean install..

I'll add, that it "looks" like its going to pull up the proper applet, but either highlighting and hitting the enter key, or clicking on the result brings me to a damn search window.

It did that for me as well.

I have a low tolerance for bullshit like that so I fixed it but saying **** you to the Win 10 start menu and using classic shell like i did with Windows 8.1

For me, Windows 10 result function like Win 7. Try it with a new User Account. I'm using Version 1511(OS Build 10586.122) Type winver in Run prompt to see what you're using.

Same build version here.

Going to try this when I get home and hopefully have enough time to play more with Windows.

If experimenting with a new user account nets the same results, I will likely end up doing the same. Its just so nice being able to use this feature, that I'm not sure I could do without it anymore.

Ok, so creating a new user account, the start menu "search" operates normally. Opens UAC, or Control Panel, misc applets.

What in the hell happened to the primary account? Any ideas on how to fix that?

I think it's easier if you just transfer your stuff to the new account. Did you do an in place upgrade?

I did that, to again attempt securing the digital rights "key". Then clean install. After I got all my outlook backups restored, games installed, etc.. Then I find this. :/

Such a pain in the ass.

That's what you did the first time and this thread is result of it?
Or did you mean you followed my suggestion to transfer the stuff and got the same problem in new account?

Are you using a Local account? what happen if you use a MS account and use Cortana?
I found this thread which has similar issue that you described but with Cortana.
Reinstall Cortana seems to work.
Open an elevated Command Prompt window (press win + X, and then press A)
Type start powershell and press enter
Run the command (in one line):

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

After 30 seconds the problem was solved on my machine. Incredible.

There are a few other suggestions in there.
Rebuild the search index. Check if the Windows Search service is enabled.

I haven't moved anything over to a new account.

This behavior is after the clean install. Using a local account, tried logging my MS account to it and it nets the same behavior.

I'll try re-installing Cortana, however I will add, that whatever settings I use for Cortana makes no difference in the behavior.

I have also tried rebuilding the index.

Reading through this thread.. http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1...searchresults-from-control-panel-or-settings/

I found the portion about making sure a folders properties allowed it to be index worked for me.

I checked the new account I made last night before bed, and sure enough the folder was check boxed to be indexed.

In my current account it was not. I am unsure as to why it happened, perhaps during my time restoring my content to my user folders, games, etc.

Seems to be working properly now.

I hope this helps someone else.

I have a friend that ran into this same issue recently, and he said he found a fix:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\windows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState Right-click the Indexed folder > Properties > Advanced > Check Allow files in this folder to have indexed in addition to file properties. Click Apply and Exit.
He said in his case, it was already checked, but he unchecked it > applied > rechecked it > applied and that fixed it for him.
