SkyDrive ... you're crap ya know that?

Why does SkyDrive suck so much? I'm wanting it to keep a School and Work folder in sync. Yesterday I cleared out my School folder. Copied a directory from an external HDD and let it sit overnight. All told this is 16 GB of data I wanted to keep in sync between a desktop PC and the cloud. Then from my laptop I could just pick & choose what files I pull down right? Under the Settings option in the app tray I set it to "All Files & Folders" for my SkyDrive folder. I made sure the PC would not lock itself or go to sleep, HDDs would stay on and everything. Left it overnight and went to work. Come home today and it has completed ZERO sync tasks. It started with 16.4 GB of data to sync and last night, before I turned the displays off and went away it said "Uploading 1.1GB of 16.4GB with xxxx files remaining." Today coming home from work it has exactly the same status.

So I close out of SkyDrive from the tray. Delete the local folder on my PC and delete the folder in the SkyDrive cloud (the same Work and School folders). I figure this time I'll just ask it to do less. Like a lot less. So I pull a bunch of the bigger stuff out of my "Work" folder (i.e. Outlook PST archives and such) and condense it down to just 1.5 GB total I'm asking SkyDrive to sync. It's currently 15 minutes into "Processing Changes..." now it's "Looking for Changes..." and I dare not interrupt it. But so far nothing's showing up online.

GDrive, just use it - with external tools you can just encrypt it anyway in case you trust Microsoft more than Google.

Which I would personally find a bit odd. I wouldn't trust either of them :p

I checked this morning before going off to work and noticed it had thankfully finished. So apparently it can manage 1.5GB ish overnight. There's a few errors it tossed up, something about a OneNote link not working and needing me to remove the OneNote file from the website interface, plus something about a few Excel files showing (hey a newer copy was added on the Cloud, get rid of this local copy). But it finished at least! :runaway:

Cloud sync can be tough, Skydrive isn't primetime yet I agree. It works well for me but I also use Dropbox, Box.net, Amazon Cloud drive and Google drive.

It's getting to be a chore...

I actually sue Skydrive exclusively and have had zero issues using it. I can easily access any file I need from anywhere and edit not matter the computer or device I am on.

A lot of your issue is likely your desire to do this all at once. Remember, unless you have a dedicated line your upload speeds are likely much slower than download, 1.5 gig is a LOT of data to move. Taking overnight is reasonable to me for an upload.

From MS....

On a Windows computer, do the following:
  1. Shut down SkyDrive
  2. Open the Run dialog (press the Windows key on your keyboard + R)
  3. Type %localappdata%\Microsoft\SkyDrive\settings\global.ini and press enter
  4. After global.ini is opened in the editor of your choice in step 2, add the line numberOfConcurrentUploads = 2 as the first line in the document (make sure that line isn’t already presentanywherein the file, and do not make changes to other lines in the file, as they could prevent SkyDrive from working)
  5. You can set the value of numberOfConcurrentUploads to either 1, 2, or 3
  6. Once you’re done with that, save your changes to global.ini and start SkyDrive

They allow for three ports. I changed to 3 on the global.ini.

I also found that if you go into the ClientPolicy.ini and change the NumberOfCurrentUploads from 1 to 3 it speeds things along rather quickly as well.

I haven't gone more than three because I don't want to exceed what they have set down as an acceptable number of upload ports. Don't want to lose my account. But still, I uploaded 42 gigs in under 24 hours with that setting.

Hope it helps.

 That's a damned good tip, I'll have to give that a try tonight.

So I have no idea how to fix this OneNote link thing. It keeps popping up. I have no OneNote files anywhere in my SkyDrive folder and I've never used it on my desktop. I suspect it's just conducting some sort of psychological warfare on me with that ****ing popup notification that keeps showing up, bouncing up and down like a Jack ****ing Russel Terrier, wanting my attention but when I click on it I'm taken to the web interface where there's nothing to delete! So I dismiss the notification and it just keeps coming back.

Seriously though I've dismissed the notification probably 17 times now. I click the dialogue and it takes me to the website. Nothing to delete still (yes I've searched for every permutation of "one" or "note" or file extensions seemingly associated with it and can't find anything) so I click the X and it goes away. Then about 1 minute later it's back.

No problem.

I had forgotten that I did that tweak a few months back. It basically multiplied the speed by 3X up. It doesn't do anything for the download speed but that isn't too bad with the SkyDrive.

Anyhow, hope that helped.

I stick to Dropbox after issues with SkyDrive (like deleting photos from my iMac folder but yet the photos still show up on the web ????) and Google Drive.

I'm in the process of moving everything to my Bitcasa Infinite Drive and using Dropbox for files that are "in play".

Skydrive doesn't sync one-note files down to your local pc, it just puts internet links into the folders. Looks like this for me:

Never had an error message like that though and i actually have two OneNot-files on there.

I turned SkyDrive off, went through the SkyDrive web interface again (and found nothing). Looked on my laptop though and had a OneNote notebook there. Deleted it too. Restarted SkyDrive on the desktop PC and haven't seen the error come back. Right now I really only have it sync'ing the desktop anymore. At some point I've decided I will probably do a W8 image on my MacBook Pro and set the sync back up and see what happens.
