Small Tablet

Hey gays,

I am looking for a small tablet for watching movies/netflix while travelling. (just not apple)

Ideas?

thanks in advance.

If you are only browsing the web and watching movies, it will do all of that just fine. You don't need an uber tablet for that. If you want to spend more money, look at the Google Pixel tablet. IMO, way overpriced but "newer" if that's what you want.

No I completely agree -- thats all I need Netflix/Google/Email box. Looking now! I had a google pixel tablet in the past, should have kept it. These new ones are nice but $$$$$ and MASSIVE. I want something ~8" for travel.

Also, this may give you some ideas:

Personally, I'm using an Nvidia Shield K1. Had I known they were going to discontinue them when the Nintendo Switch came out, I would have bought more than 1 but IMO spending more than $300-400 on a tablet is a waste. More than that and I would just go for a Microsoft Surface.

I am actually looking at used Nvidia Shield K1 for about $160USD -- would you suggest one?

Just keep in mind it's discontinued so there are likely no more updates for it. Overall, it's a good device and I really like mine. I't been good over the years but there are some short comings for it:

  • The form factor is compact which is nice.
  • Due to the small form factor, it also has a small battery. It works well to watch downloaded movies but you won't be able to use things like Bluetooth headsets at the same time. The battery drain at that point barely gets you through a 2 hour movie. Without enabling things like Bluetooth, battery life is decent for just watching movies. Games will depend on the game how much it will drain. As you can tell, you'll be balancing the drain on the system but you can just use one of those portable battery packs which is what I do.
  • The SD slot is finicky... If you don't have the "right" SD card, it causes some strange behavior with the device.

However, you can't expect it to behave like a high dollar device at it's price.

Lenovo's Tab 4 Plus 8" is a pretty decent tablet and reasonably priced. I have it for travel use.

I've been looking for a new tablet recently to replace my Nexus 7, which is starting to feel low on RAM when aggregating my emails, then having to browse, or use an app.

Was eyeing a Samsung Tab S4, or even a Tab A. But I think the Surface Go is starting to kill all the options for me.

What about an Amazon Fire HD 7 or 8? I personally haven't used one, but I've heard good things if you don't mind being tied to the Amazon ecosystem.

I love Asus products.....except for their tablets. Bought several of the 7 inch chepaer ones for the kids a couple of years ago had batter issues with all of them. One was repaired under warranty (the others waited until warranty expired), and then the replacement died with the same issue (plugged into charge and instead of charging symbol, a big "?" appears.

In the meantime, my Galaxy Tab Pro from 2014 is still kicking ass.

Samsung or die.

Thanks Mahjik -- still kind of torn. Really wish Nvidia didn't discontinue!

RE: Lenovo's Tab 4 Plus 8" -- have looked at that one as well.

RE: Samsungs are nice but I hate the bloat.

RE: Amazon Fire HD 8" -- contemplating this for $99 CAD, hard to lose really.

I'd go cheap, the Fire HD is probably a solid choice. If you're like me, you'll find tablets useless pretty quickly

I have the Amazon Fire 8 HD. Two things to keep in mind

1) It does not have access to Google Playstore (It can be done though. Just requires some work and googling articles on how to get it on there)
2) They get slower with time and have to be reset to get the speed back

The Amazon devices are great if you mainly use Amazon apps/services. Outside of that, I would stay away.

I have a Samsung, is fine not sure about this bloat speak of, does not bother me. I found I do not use the thing other than as a Kindle to read my Manga and comics. Otherwise I find I just use my phone now that I have the Essential. It is just to awesome to waste time looking the tablet.

I have been through numerous ipads, surface pros, pixels, etc. Not sure why I am coming back?

I guess the main reason -- I fly so much I have always seen the movies on the plane. Lately I have been just downloading netflix shows to my phone but getting sick of staring at my phone for 12 hours. This is why I am looking for something around 8" -- don't want big either, I already bring too many gadgets with me and never check bags so need to be conscious of space.

Currently looking at a Huawei T5
