The C&C Generals ZeroHour Problem

I love the game if I can only actually play it! I have C&C Generals and the ZeroHour expansion. The problem is this, the game loves to shut itself off with a long winded dialog box about some kind of vague problem and the possibilities that may cause it (overheating, out of date drivers, moon's in the wrong phase, etc.). The error log always indicate this:
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION and a long data dump.
I'm guessing it was unable to write data in memory or to the swap file.

I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro over the weekend, but no joy there.
The solutions in the other forums ranged from changing the game speed to a higher level for faster PCs, others used registry hacks about the PCI bus (I kid you not). Some fixes seem to last a few gaming sessions and then the problem returns, a few say have gotten the game to work without this issue popping up again.

The previous installation a few times I could play the game without it shutting down. It's unpredictable (it would shutdown FROM THE MENU) when it happens though generally the larger maps are more likely to trigger it.

Doubly frustrating as my friends have no problems but they have vastly different hardware and configurations, sharing that only their CPUs are made by Intel (but different lines - Pentium M and Pentium 4) on Intel chipsets. But different OS's installed, different game mounting, different sound hardware, ATI and Nvidia GPUs.

Sorry to be long winded, but I thought I might have this licked after a clean install with the current hardware. I have no stability issues with my current PC, so I'm certain it's the game program itself, but what's the root cause seems to be a mystery - either people have it or don't.

Re: The C&C Generals ZeroHour Problem

Yeah this has been around. My bro and i suffered the same thing, even tho our systems where 90% the same. From same mobo, vid card, and ram, he was getting the error while i was not. No idea why. Tho, its been somtime since ive seen that error pop up since reformating his machine a few times since. weird.
